Hi there!
Another submission from me XD I want to submit Laveriel for both Master in Affliction and Path to Grandmaster. She had been an afflictionist for a long, long time and it is an essential part of her. To Veriel, this particular magic was the one that empowered her when she was weak and eventually led her to who she is now.
Is this a skill that defines the character? Is it something that you can imagine them without?
Affliction is the magic that serves as the core of who Veriel is - despite Reaving being the one she was first initiated into. Reaving was a requirement for her to join the dawnmartyrs, while Affliction was something she chose for herself even when didn’t have to. She likes the silent power it gives her and the creativity needed to utilize it.
How often do they use the skill? If it is something used infrequently, it is likely not a candidate for Grandmaster.
Constantly, using Affliction comes naturally to her. The most obvious use is of course using it offensively during combat. She also often uses it to drain away her pain when injured. On more unsavory occasions, she’ll use it as a method of torture. Even for something as inconsequential as sobering herself up, Veriel likes to make use of the magic.
What efforts has the character put into developing their own perspective and unique approach to using the skill? What is their trademark use of it?
Her most notable way of utilizing Affliction is combining it with Reaving. Her take on the magic made it even deadlier. While most afflictionists are hindered by the need for direct contact to cast their magic, Veriel came up with a creative way to bypass that limitation by using her dancing pact weapons as carriers. She also uses it to her advantage as a first aid for injuries she might sustain in battle, e.g. diminishing her pain and cleansing herself of poison by pulling their debilitating effects into her aether and turning them into hexes.
Is this a skill that others immediately attribute to the character? If not, consider fostering a reputation involving its use.
Back during the Age of Sundering, Veriel had gained a reputation for her style of fighting using Affliction. It had given her a certain degree of infamy and an edge compared to other knights. To those who had worked by her side, it would be the easiest thing to attribute to her. However, due to the nature of affliction, she doesn’t go out of her way to announce her capabilities - affliction is much more advantageous when your opponent doesn’t know you have it.
How have you used the skill in your writing to impact not just your own character but others?
As a dawnmartyr, Veriel uses Affliction to do what she believes to be good. Defending the innocent, fighting for her comrades, dealing out punishments to those deserving. With the world changing, recently Veriel is slowly coming out of hiding and involving herself with the happenings around her.
Threads involving Affliction:

Wave of Darkness
The Loneliness of Dusk
