Korvaelis Dahshida

It had been a year.

A YEAR.

Well, a little more than a year. However, Korvaelis still couldn’t wrap his head around it. What made processing it even harder was the fact that he had to keep it to himself. Some say talking about the topic aids a person’s understanding. Conversations help organize your thoughts and process them. But he couldn’t talk to anyone. It would be too big of a risk to even hint at it. He’d just have to swallow his feelings, a mixture of pride and joy. There was a hint of sadness too since he couldn’t express it either. Of course, that’s how it happened too. Still, he’s been floating on a cloud ever since.

A baby.

Korvaelis had given birth to a healthy baby. It felt like it wasn’t that long ago but it’s already been more than a year! What made him even more ecstatic? The acceptance of the Dashida household. Garnet would not carry the name. Korvaelis would feel a pang of guilt if he further disrespected the family. But they, Garnet, would experience something Korvaelis never had as a child. One person in particular is guaranteed to give the baby an immense amount of warmth and love. That’s all he could ask for.

The mountains shielded a majority of the estate in the morning from the sun. A slither of light slipped through the bedroom window. It’s never enough to wake the mixed blood up, so he often relied on the songs of a choir of birds to get him out of bed. However, this morning’s song was accompanied by bursts of laughter and babble that warmed the lord’s insides. He wasn’t necessarily awake to hear it as his eyes were still closed and his back was turned toward the noise. But Korvaelis had become a really light sleeper in a short time span. So he became aware of his surroundings quickly. As matter a of fact, the lord had no choice if he wanted to keep a close eye on his new bundle of joy.

“Mmm, so tasty.” A cracking voice said in a soft tone.

Korvaelis rolled over to find an Avialae almost his height cradling a small blue baby in his bed. He couldn’t believe it was Aki every time he saw him. The birth of Garnet had forced him to hide even from his first child and when Aki returned, the Avialae child was different. The small, frail bird-like child had become large and tough. Aki showed signs of being a true Dahshida warrior and he even took interest in becoming a Shadow Guard. Since his return, books on tracking, martial arts, archery, and swordsmanship had been scattered throughout the house. Is he on the path to becoming a man? Korvaelis refused to believe it. Perhaps the only thing he couldn’t deny was the boy’s looks shifting. Akiba’s face was beginning to haunt Korvaelis every day.

“You’re finally up,” Aki said as Garnet placed their little hands on the Avialae's mouth, hoping he would pretend to eat it. Aki, being a complete sucker, did as the baby pleased too. “Netty was just sitting here. They were staring at you quietly. I’ve been playing with them ever since. I bet Netty’s hungry though.”

"Give it a tug and move forward, she’ll eventually follow.”

He cradled Garnet while directing Aki on how to handle the hunting cat. The small family sat and ate breakfast together that morning. The youngest member was moody at some point, preferring their eldest brother for a time as they gulped down pureed fruit. Korvaelis usually planned his day around the mood swings of a toddler too. He tried to take the redhead child off his boy’s hands, but they would begin to whine. Korvaelis knew how this would go too, so he took a few bites out of his food and decided to do a couple of household chores.

Well, he thought of it as household chores, however, Korvaelis decided to take care of the barn in the meantime. Despite being a kite, Korvaelis handled the majority of the cleaning. He cleaned out whelping boxes and cages, and a few times out of the season he would have to clean out the storage room to avoid infestation problems. The stables were relieved of any Korihane and Korvaelis usually allowed his horse to roam the forest during the day. So he swept up dirty hay, rinse and disinfected areas that previously held wounded animals then laid out new bedding for any emergency visits.

The widower finished just in time too. Garnet grew cranky and it was too much for Aki to handle. Korvaelis wasted no time taking over, but he decided to ask Aki to help deal with a different matter.

“You’ve got it.”

Aki leads one of the hunting cats. During his cleanup session, he noticed the large beast walking funny and licking one of her paws. Sadly, he couldn’t handle it at that time although he was sure it was something he could help the poor animal with.

“She’s dragging her feet a little.” Aki huffed while pulling the animal forward a little.

This wasn’t Korvaelis’ usual method of training, but he could only deal with so much at the moment. I should inquire about a nanny. It was easier running a business with a child who could hardly talk or walk. Back when Garnet only had three necessities and less of a personality, Korvaelis could keep up with tasks. It was becoming increasingly harder. He realized this as he tried redirecting Aki on how to properly deal with the situation, making note of the fact that the young Avialae may need a bit more training himself in the future.

“It’s okay. Just do your best to slowly guide her to the stables.”
