Threads That Bind
Creating threads that connect to their target’s aether is among the first skills that any afflictionist would learn - the foundation of everything else after. Generally, they are loose and weak, their purpose only to deliver afflictions before dissolving. This technique is designed to change that. Inspired by her experience of being bonded to an avialae, Veriel realized that preserving the connection her threads can make can be very useful.
The moment her thread makes contact with an individual’s aether, Veriel has to make the conscious decision to strengthen it. Unlike normal afflictionist threads, these will not simply disappear. Once the connection is established, the thread will be nearly impossible to undo unless by Veriel herself. Every thread will be different, considering it will change based on the affliction she uses to anchor it.
Her trick is not to plan a complex curse that would last years, but rather maintain a connection that latches onto the afflicted indefinitely to freely inflict whatever curses she wants at any time. In an emergency, this bypasses the need for a hastily made curse that will cause unspeakable curserot. With this, Veriel can simply throw a simpler jinx and bind the victim to her. Once she has the proper time and preparation for the intended affliction, then she can simply send it down the line of their connection without needing direct contact with the subject.
As she grows stronger, Veriel will be able to hold onto and manage more threads at the same time. If she only has one active connection, she will be able to maintain the connection indefinitely across vast distances. The more links there are, the faster they will deteriorate and end up breaking.
