60 Frost, Year 123

The sisters stood in the shade of the trees of the mastic grove, while Hayima'el rested in the sands not far off. He was munching on leaves, content where he was laying, and unconcerned about moving for the time being. The river was but a few miles off, easy to get to, but far enough away that predators around it weren't likely to come here. But the spirits and the camel made for a great early warning system, and that allowed for the Vastii to have their time together. It would be getting dark soon, as Frost meant less and less sun; but Hilana knew this area like the back of her hand. Navigating at night was easier than the day out here, but this was well-tread territory for her.

"Something I've learned from watching you, Lykos, Sentinels, and the bloodsports is that every act of close combat is a dance," Athalia said as she and Hilana looked on at each other in the sand. "With or without weapons. It is balance. It is harmony. It is movement. There is a flow to it that has a grace that I think you can tap into. You've got great body control from your years of riding, you climb well, you have agility and you can move on a dance floor. And if you can do all of that, you can fight. You're never going to be able to wrestle and brawl with men Lykos' size so easily, they're always going to be stronger than you. But you've got speed, and you've got reach with those long limbs of yours. You've got the wind to help you, because the spirits want to come to your aid."

"Asher and Vorenus said that before, too. And that they're less likely to expect it from me," Hilana agreed with her. "So I needed to take advantage of it."

"They were right. You may be a little magelet now, but you'll never know when you'll find some space where you cannot use your magic, and it is better to be prepared than not." Athalia had her usual long dress on, but Hilana had used her scarf to tie her voluminous cotton skirts up towards her hips, giving her more room with her legs. "Like we do in dance... feel the feet, Hilana. Feel the rhythm. Let's dance." She raised one eyebrow, having a small smile on her face.
