In Depths Doth He Slumber
Searing 3rd, 124th Year, A.o.S.

He hadn't expected much of the waking world to feel this much more of a vivid dream to himself, even so, it could not be helped that in every moment spent asleep; there was that insatiable need to reach out and be right beside people he loved. Within the confines of his private quarters within the familial house where his physical avatar remained dormant, watchful eyes remained on the loved ones who tended to him even as they started to leave the room. The sweet moments of affection found within their world of worry often touched him ever deeply, yet no matter how much he yearned to respond...

Rickter could not push himself to stir from the slumber he'd found himself fallen within. Sitting patiently at the foot of his own bed where his sleeping body rested, he watched hopeful with deep blue eyes at the ones who had gathered here today. Telion. The twins. Hannah. Even the Vastiana sisters Hilana and Athalia. There had been quite a few guests within his own household to be sure, but having remained dormant even when other guests just as special to him arrived? Even that evoked a sense of melancholy within the wolf.

I know you can't hear me right now... He reminded himself with a sense of hopeful prayer in his thoughts. But I am here... with all of you. Regardless of how that may feel. How often did his mind truly wonder to the people who should finally remember him by now? The people he'd felt his connections with should have been completely restored, the attachments to him no longer severed enough so that his own existence remained a ghost of a memory.

Yet even so... Something kept Rickter, the actual Rickter, from truly returning in the fashion everyone likely hoped for. As he watched those gathered leave the room for a while, he could see the hopeful look in Telion's eyes, after seeing such sadness within them for the past few days it was a warmingly welcome change. They all left him alone to sleep in his room and yet, somehow, Rickter didn't even feel so quite alone as one expected to. It was without even looking away at his slumbering form, that he addressed the proverbial elephant still lingering within that shared room.

"Took you long enough..." The wolf murmured aloud almost as if to no one, except the presence of his other half stood at the other side of the foot of the bed. Lykos. A spitting image of who Rickter often saw himself as, however, not so much the same in the sense of how he felt. "Wasn't sure how long before you'd finally find me in here."

"Well, you haven't made that easy." Even the sound of his own voice was nearly chilling to the surface of his skin. There was without a doubt no mistaking who and what this man, if He could be referred to as such, really was when it came down to the source of it all. "...You've remained gone a bit too long, Rickter." The wolf lowered his gaze to the statement with contemplation, sharing a weighted sense of regret even in hearing such words.

"...I know." He reasoned in return, although his mind had been made up on that the moment his existence fully returned.

"Perhaps... You and I should carry on this conversation elsewhere. It's about time you and I finally talked after all." His other half suggested with a steady reach of His hand, the firmness Rickter expected to feel somehow balanced with a gentle grip beneath the hand. The wolf shifted his gaze to match that of his exact mirror, into the glowing blue eyes of Lykos as Rickter himself shifted to acknowledge him completely with a peaceful confidence.

"On that, we agree on..." He bargained with a glance toward the doorway, uncertain where it was that the both of them would go. This was the Realm of Nod, of course, their venture could've easily wound up anywhere. Then again, it wasn't necessarily their destination that remained important either, merely the conversation to be had as they traversed such a limitless realm together. "Very well," he proceeded to sigh with one final glance to his dormant form, "let's leave this place for now and catch up on things." Not that such a notion remained entirely necessary.

Lykos had been diligently assessing the memories that had existed within Rickter since he had returned, and even so, the wolf had done the same with every memory Lykos ever made during his state of dormancy. Rickter rose from the edge of the mattress he sat on, paying Lykos another look before he gently nodded for Him to take the lead. His other half calmly nodded before He turned to approach the sliding door, placing a hand on it's wooden panel before he looked back to Rickter once more. "Are you ready?"

"Yeah." The wolf nodded to emphasize his willingness to go, ready to accompany Lykos beyond the threshold of the door. It was with a smooth motion of His wrist that the Lupine Draegir opened the door in the bedroom, sliding it wide so that light filtered through almost in a blinding daze before both of their eyes adjusted to the other side. Pure crystalline fields of snow awaited Rickter as Lykos allowed him to enter first, before both of them crossed over to step quietly onto the powdery plains before them. A soft crunch was felt beneath their boots as Rickter quietly marveled at the scenery, taking in the rather beautiful night sky where an aurora greeted them both with hues of neons in both green, yellow and even blue.

Mountains bordered what appeared to be the boundless tundra that they had stumbled into, the snowy fields patched but not quite littered with spots of boreal forests in many different directions. If he had to take a guess where this was then it was somewhere resemblant not to the Ice Plain itself, but rather, a place kin to it that reflected one of the foundations in Rickter's very soul. But then, dreams always shaped themselves in many different and often ironic ways. "Strange how peaceful things seem here." The wolf remarked with his eyes toward the night sky in appreciation, their gaze briefly locked on the northern star hidden beyond the blanket of lights slowly dancing overhead. A reminder of the very thing that used to be his guide, and a source of hope when times had strained him to even the point of breaking before.

"Yet even in places like this, such peace can be fleeting..." Lykos commended as He too had gazed up at the same star, probably now understanding the significance of it back when He and Hilana shared a night to watch it for a while. "Tell me this, Rickter, why is it you haven't returned to the waking world exactly?" A question that cut straight to the point of it all, and yet even so, it posed a greater riddle to the wolf himself than any answer he sought to find.

"..." His gaze fell from the shimmering heavens down to their feet in silence, with only the gentle puff of moisture from his nostrils visible to mark the silent sigh that escaped his nose. "...I honestly don't know." The response did not surprise his counterpart in the slightest, at the very least, Lykos seemed all the more perplexed by that answer that He needed a moment to consider. Unsure of how else to describe his own thoughts, Rickter sought to elaborate on himself as best as he could assess the situation. "I've wanted to beyond belief. Every fiber of my being yearns to, and yet somehow, no matter how hard I try..."

"You literally can't awaken." The Lupine Draegir finished the sentence for him rather knowingly, His own silent sigh visible through the puff of moisture from his nostrils. "I've poured over every memory that has belonged to you. Done scoured every possible reason as to why you would still remain in this state, and now it looks like the both of us are to remain dormant for the next few months."

"I suppose that's how you've had plenty of time to search deeper inside yourself, well, our self if you will." The wolf looked to his counterpart with raised eyebrows, grasping at the logistics of how things had finally led up to this point between the two of them. "You've your own share of questions, that I can tell, but there's some things on my mind that I've not fathomed quite yet also." Lykos hardly seemed impressed by that since Rickter had been a silent observer from within, practically absorbing his own wealth of insight from the experiences the Lupine Draegir shared with him.

"Why not," He then responded to Rickter with a near smile, "it seems to me you and I have a bit more to learn about each other." Especially of the Draegir wanted to help free Rickter from whatever kept him in his dormant state. "Answer me this then ask your question, what do you feel is keeping you held here? Stuck as you are?" The clarification on the inquiry led Rickter to look away from his counterpart, eyeing the mountains and landscapes bordering the horizon as he sought that answer for himself.

"Well it's definitely as you put it." The wolf confirmed without needing to elaborate on it. "Apart from feeling stuck in one place, something about me feels unusual compared to before... I guess for the first in what feels like a long time... I just feel cold again." Cold. The Lord of Frost should never feel such a thing. Whatever it was that kept Rickter caught in this state, it surely interfered with his ability to reconnect with the waking world as well. "As for you..." It was now a question of soul searching for the wolf, of that, Lykos knew for certain when Rickter gazed back toward him thoughtfully.

"Why did you seek me out exactly?" The Lupine Draegir raised an eyebrow to that question, and for all intents and purposes, it led Rickter to feel the need for elaboration from his perspective. "You started out with only 'Lord of Frost' to your name... but then you turned it into something for yourself. You made it worth something. Yet even so you still wanted to restore me, even when you had every opportunity to pick up the pieces of my life, you never once thought to claim it as your own once our memories came back."

"You really do want to know why, don't you?" Lykos sounded a bit astonished by that realization just now, even as He expected Rickter to ascertain such answers for himself at this point. "I suppose... I could have." The Draegir agreed with some reluctance in His voice, but not without giving Rickter a sternly determined gaze in return. "But living a life such as that would've only left me feeling as hollowed out as the day you were lost, Rickter."

The wolf looked toward him with a pensive side eye before his gaze averted. "I may have inherited the moniker but it's you who has been the Lord of Frost, it always will be, as it has been your birthright from the moment you ascended. Despite your struggles you're still just a fledgling Draegir, a powerful one to be sure, but a fledgling compared to the true legacy that rests within you." Lykos approached Rickter then with His hands raised to rest on the wolf's shoulders, His gaze heavily meaningful as he continued to express His long unsaid sentiments. "Who am I to take what's rightfully yours? What's always been yours when you've only started this path? I may have learned what it means to be a Draegir only a little in my time, but that time is enough for me, and plentiful for you to learn and grow to continually make this path your own."

"And yet you'd give it all up, just for me?" The wolf reasoned with a heavy heart in his tone. "Lykos do you not realize what happens to you in all this?" It had only grown obvious to Rickter due to the time spent within his own solitary contemplation, reevaluating every memory Lykos ever made on their behalf while the wolf himself had remained gone in their life. "How can you just accept that?"

"Because I believe it's the right path. We may share a body and a mind, but it will always belong to you Rickter. I would never dare to contest that, such is the reason why I've accepted it as my fate. Destiny if you will." Rickter gritted his jaw for a moment if only by brief aggravation.

"That may be, Lykos, but you are also still you." He rebutted with firm hands grasped on Lykos' shoulders now. "Think of what that means! Two souls cannot hope to exist within one mind and one body forever! What happens to you? You of all people, who deserve to have a chance of your own?! Your own vessel?!" Lykos' eyes widened with sheer awe as he could hear the fear quaking Rickter's voice, the sadness and depth the wolf held in value of his other half who he'd barely ever had the chance to interact with before...

And yet somehow remained an integral part of, even now.

"I feel as though I've been a part of you before all that, long before all this even took place Rickter..." The Draegir confessed as he brought the wolf's forehead close to his own, a familiar comfort shared through their spiritually physical connection. "Despite that, your capacity to see me as something else, deserving of my own vestige and free will... It's amazing the lengths of love you have for those that rest inside your heart." The wolf's breathing went hefty and paced for a few moments, a sure tell sign of the emotion that welled out through his eyes.

"And this is why it has to be you." The Draegir asserted peacefully with a hint of pride in his tone. "If my fate is to fade away, then so be it. Because of you, I'll carry on living through you. It may not happen right away, but eventually, the boundaries that separate you and I will blur until the time comes when you are ready; to completely inherit the legacy that rests inside you. Even now, it flows in your blood, waiting for you to claim it and manifest into something more."

"So..." The wolf huffed as their heads pulled apart, his eyes slightly reddened as Lykos brushed tears off his cheeks. "That's it then?... I'm not ready to let you go, not when we've so much else to talk about and discover."

"We have time," the Draegir reasoned with him appreciatively, "plenty of time even beyond our slumber. You and I already have a lot of soul searching to do together..." Reluctantly Rickter found himself agreeing to that statement, which led Lykos to gently pad him on the head a couple of times. "For now though, we must continue seeking out a way to awaken you, once Searing has reached its conclusion."

"...Yeah, I suppose that's equally important..." The wolf yet again agreed as it merited a warm chuckle from Lykos. "Any suggestions on where we start?"

"A few." Lykos then hinted as he lowered his hands from Rickter's shoulders, his gaze shifting once more to the frozen fields they stood within. "How about we sort through your memories together this time? Starting with where your journey began, up to the events that led you and me here to this day?"

"That's... Aye." Rickter somehow found himself able to softly smile at his counterpart, as he already had an idea on the exact starting point to begin this journey with Lykos. "That sounds like a plan." When he shifted his attention back to the northern skies, Rickter started with a few slow steps that broke into a relaxing stride. After all, a lot has happened over the past few years. But to think back to such times Rickter had to go back to the beginning of it all.

When it all started... on that night within the brume.
