The Yawning Chasm

Surrounded by the sturdy walls of Mistreach Keep, the Yawning Chasm is a mystery as well as a temptation to those who see it. The history of the Chasm is as old as Kalzasi itself. Originally the Orkhan who lived here were mining people, utilizing the rich mineral deposits to carve out a reasonable living for themselves. The events of the Sundering changed everything. The raging power ripped the very ground apart, the mines of the Orkhan collapsed, taking the settlement and many of the people down with it. Where a once peaceful settlement stood, in its place was now a gaping chasm that released from it a wave of despair that chilled the very air. The Yawning Chasm became an area actively avoided by those people who remained after the collapse, and soon even those who stubbornly held onto the land they called home could not remain as the monstrosities of the Warrens began to flood from the depths.

The lands surrounding the Yawning Chasm were abandoned and remained so until the coming of the Avialae who helped the Orkhan fight back the horrors of the Warrens and take back the settlement. From their partnership, the Sky Guard was created, and Mistreach Keep erected to keep the creatures contained within the Chasm. In the current age, the Yawning Chasm is guarded and patroled every hour of every day. The beasts that arise are routinely culled, but no matter how many are killed they seem to never end.

There is no single entrance into the first Deep of the warrens from the Yawning Chasm. Caves, caverns, and other openings are scattered across the chasm, almost all of which lead down into the Warrens below. There is a handful that is more often used than others, especially the largest near the west edge of the Chasm. This entrance is most often used and has even been artificially widened and stairs added leading down into the deep.
