"Of the diurnal raptors," the natural philosopher continued, "distinct morphology suggests behaviors and traits."

Neither Kala nor Kaus had expected to be rapt through a lecture in natural philosophy, of course, but the woman was speaking to their obsessions. Flight was Kaus' favorite activity and wings were Kala's obsession. Sometimes she wondered if she might not fashion her own out of clockwork and magic if the Gods didn't see fit to gift her with a set like her brother's. But that was a discussion for another class. The natural philosopher could speak to the morphology of wings, but a priest was more likely to have an answer why the Gods chose not to grant the female of the species similar plumage.

"Falcons, of course, have the edge in sheer speed. If you have ever seen one stooping down upon its prey, then you have quick eyes. Their wings are long and pointed for flying low to the ground, helping with the element of surprise. When they stoop, they bring their wings in, in essence reducing their resistance as they pass through the air like a loosed arrow. As you can see, their wings are much narrower than the broad wings of their cousins, the hawks." She shifted her glass lens over the desk and the inherent magic of the bauble bent the light to project the drawings under it into the air like the ghostly illusion of bird anatomy.

"Notice also the relative size of the hawk's talons, which need to be strong since their prey tend to be wriggling mammals and their hunting style often relies upon a high vantage point, using their excellent eyesight to spot movement below, and when they attack, they will not let go. Some hawks will use their broad wings to steady themselves over a hunting patch, as well. While fast, they aren't quite built for speed the same way as their falcon cousins."

Shifting the magic glass also gave the students a moving image of the various named species in flight, at the hunt.

"Harriers, close cousins of the hawks, tend to hunt in marshes and fields where there are no trees or even buildings to perch on. Their long wings and tails help them fly low and steady, the better to make use of their keen sense of sight. They even have facial disks similar to owls that are believed to act similarly to our ears. And, of course, vultures and other carrion-eaters have better developed senses of smell in order to find their meals, although their eyes are keen enough to see the movement of other scavengers."

Here the twins found a lull in their interest. Kaus glanced at his sister, knowing some sort of thoughts were brewing in her head. He sent a note of curiosity through their bond. While it was strong enough to communicate in words as if they were speaking, they had been communicating with each other since before they had words and sometimes they didn't require them still. She smiled quietly and made a dismissive gesture. She was having thoughts, but they weren't fully formed yet and so she couldn't share them.

Listen, she sent, and turned her own attention back to the instructor.

"...goshawks and sparrowhawks and the like," she continued, "tend to have short, rounded wings and long tails that act as rudders for added agility. They hunt in forests and the like where there are more obstacles. Their smaller cousins, the kites, are truly graceful in the air, though their wings are narrow and pointed, more akin to the larger falcons." The images kept pace with their instructor's lecture. "You will see them hanging motionless in the air, swooping and gliding, rolling upside down, and then speeding high in the air with scarcely a motion of their wings. They will snatch an insect out of the air or a serpent from a branch. Just beautiful..."

Their instructor's passion for the topic began to seep into the lecture. The information was all good, though more and more she just seemed to be showing off her collection of pictures and such, but the twins certainly didn't mind.

"Eagles! Eagles and osprey are built for sheer power. Golden eagles have been known to take down wolves, to knock goats off of cliffs. Notice the osprey's heavy talons. The fish they hunt can be even more slippery than a hawk's supper. Eagles, osprey, and hawks all have death grips, which makes sense considering their prey."

While the natural philosopher waxed eloquent and grew more excited, Kala began to regard her brother with a calculating eye. When he caught her looking at him like that—a look that sometimes boded trouble—he whispered, "What?"

"Any questions?"

"Any questions?"

"Kala," he whined.

"Don't whine. This could lead to a real edge for you if you want to join the Sky Guard." Her smile went a bit wicked. "Now turn around."

Kaus turned around sullenly, showing off her handicraft. Kala didn't really know much about sewing. Her mother was much more concerned that she be capable in other matters than being able to darn socks or cook meals. She would always be taken care of in that sense. In any case, the work was rough, but the sailcloth was stiff enough and strong enough that it ought to work, if not as well as a bird's tail, then enough to experiment and, perhaps, bring what she found to people who could bring her imagination to life better than she could.

"Lovely," she breathed, wickedness in full effect.

"Shut up."

He wore a skirt of sorts, that sailcloth tight around his waist and belling out a bit as it went down, the seam held together by leather thongs through "rivets" she had bored into the edge. It wasn't really a huge problem for him. Skirted robes were comfortable and while their species' sexes were quite obviously defined and delineated, he wasn't embarrassed by wearing a skirt as some men might. Perhaps it was the wings themselves that made manhood less important a concept because his manhood was evident whether he wore any sort of pants or skirts at all. He only had to prove himself in a Warren March, but that was another thing altogether.

While relatively skilled at flight, especially for his age, he anticipated this being a challenge and not one he wanted people to see him struggle with. And so they had gone outside the city, found a field, and here they were.

Kala found a comfortable place to sit and he stopped sulking and spread his wings. They had discussed this at length already, with voice and silently along their bond. Taking to the air, he rose in lazy spirals, using the air as much as his own power. He found a thermal and then it was mostly just a matter of catching as much in his wings as possible. Then, of course, there was the Air. His element. It always rose to meet him, making his flight all the better, with or without his proficiency. It seemed to anticipate what he needed and give it to him, to protect him from harm, even. When explaining the feeling to Kala, who had not yet formed the same bond with an element, he could only describe it in terms of their own bond, which, thankfully, had made her more curious rather than jealous. Of course, jealousy was rare between them. They were so certain of their bond that the larger worry was how future relationships might suffer jealousy.

From a decent height, he hovered for a moment, found Kala on the ground. If he could see her, then she could see him. He stooped, much like the falcon in the natural philosopher's moving images, his wings bending, his lanky body becoming much like an arrow falling to the earth. He felt the usual exhilaration that never grew old, then braced, and unfurled his wings to catch the air with a snap. At the same time, he spread his legs as far as the sailcloth would allow, and felt his body bend at the waist as it caught a fair amount of friction through the air. It was different from his wings, afforded some softness from the feathers. He was glad he hadn't gone full speed or from higher or he might have had a sore back at the end of this experiment. But it did make him nearly flip rather than stop, a strange thing for one so used to how flying felt.

Feeling concern from her, he sent assurance, then immediately climbed through the air again to try it all over, his own interest more than piqued now.

For the better part of an hour, he made dives and tried all the basic aerobatic tricks up his sleeve with the addition of the "tail." He stopped because eventually his back did hurt, the muscles not used to working quite like this. He hadn't mastered a single maneuver with this addition, but he now saw all the possible applications to which it might lend itself. Kala had seen them, but he knew them on an experiential level. Wings had been granted to Avialae men, and there was certainly something magical about them. Their bones weren't light and fragile as a bird's. Perhaps not all the rules of normal flight applied to Avialae, or they just bent to the will of the Crystal Lady for all he knew. Of course, he had learned what to do with his arms and legs during flight to make his flying more efficient, more graceful. It would take time to learn how to make this more efficient and graceful.

On land again, he hobbled, his body well and truly worked to the limit. His arm around her shoulders, he let her help with some of his weight. Her hand at the small of his back, tracing the finest gossamer strands of fire between them, she sent a warmth through his overtaxed muscles, helping them relax.

He was weary, but he was young. In words and thoughts, he was regaling her with what he had learned, what he wanted to try.

She replied with half-formed ideas for how to make the tail better. Not an engineer, though, she suggested they find someone better suited to help.

"No!" he said forcefully. Then, more measured, "No, please. I want to be better at this before we show anybody. Please?"

And, of course, she acquiesced. They both had something to prove in different ways. They supported each other as a matter of course.

"Well, I'm going to have to start from scratch anyway," she mused aloud. Several of the leather thongs had snapped from hard use and the makeshift rivets of several more had frayed and stretched dangerously. It only made sense. Kaus didn't do things by half-measures and so he had put her poorly executed idea well past the stressors it would allow. "Do you think there is a way that Reaving could be modified to manifest a tail...?"

"Huh. Not that I know of, but..."

Their tête-à-tête continued as they made their slow way back to the city's nearest taxi terminal so they could fly back home and rest, but they had certainly learned valuable things today.
