"From Kalzasi, you say?" Brenner blinked at the letter handed him by Kiehler, the butler of Dornkirk Manor. Has it been screened for arcane influence?"

"Of course, Master Brenner." The butler inclined his head.

"Then give it me." The Air Commander extended his hand and accepted the envelope, drawing a letter opener from his desk. He paused, staring for a moment, at the sharp instrument- remembering when he'd been subject to another surprise and considered his chances of slaying Venetia Childs with this same slender blade, before thinking better of it. He cleared his throat and slid the blade across the paper to release the letter. He unfolded it and got to reading- an eyebrow arching within moments.

"You are dismissed, Kiehler." He paused, "Thank you." Brenner reached for a pen and paper to begin composing his reply.

Lyra,

If your letter is a surprise, it is a pleasant one. I haven't an inkling what you came to Zaichaer expecting, but I trust you are writing because you found some merit to our way of life? Although I have never set foot in Kalzasi, I can only imagine there must be a great deal of discontentment resulting from that of which you speak. It woes me to hear you have been personally afflicted, and I very much hope that justice was served to those who wronged you. I should very much like to learn what passes for Kalzasern justice. Perhaps you might enlighten me when we meet?

Ash is a bit of a busy season for me, but I could potentially meet before the 5th of Cinderfall. If that doesn't serve, it would have to be after the first week of Earth's Rest. From there, the rest of Ash should be a tad more flexible. If you write back with the dates of your visit, I'll instruct someone on staff to slate a time for us to meet. I can reserve a conference room at Dornkirk Windworks or, if you'd prefer, we can convene over a meal at one of Zaichaer's finest dining venues.

A letter is left in Lyra's mail with a custom-lettered seal, "H" being found in the wax before opening.

Lyra,

Didn't expect a letter from good ol' me did you? Well, a certain mutt we know has gone barking off on his own, and I could really use your help in locating him. Last we knew he was heading for Zaichaer, where he's likely planning to find you. I'll be in Zaichaer within the fortnight, so long as fortune favors me, to say the least.

The rest of his pack is on the move now, and we're working on a plan to get him out. Oh, and keep this letter discreet if you please? Our mutual friend wouldn't be happy to learn I'm coming to rain on his parade. I do look forward to seeing you again!
