The river of time forgets none but flows through all; the Blue Dragons are the memory that bridges its shores."

It is said that the blue dragons were the first paradox, born from the rivers of time, yet having been there at its creation. They are travelers and keepers of ancient histories. Like their creator Velar, they seek to watch and remember, and ensure that the passage of the ages continues ever forward.

Chroniclers of Time

While Vicis and her red dragons were guardians of fate, and meant to aid and guide those around them, Velar saw a different purpose to his dragonflight. The blue dragons were made from the waters of time itself, and thus could stand outside of its flow, able to sail the troubled waters that swept up the rest of creation. He knew that fate and destiny would lead the world down an endless number of paths, and to the blue dragons he tasked the recording of those events. This cause, this mission Velar felt was of the utmost importance, for with time comes change, and with change what once was is often forgotten.

Psychology of a Blue Dragon

To a blue dragon time is not always linear. It can branch and twist in unexpected ways, and many are more interested in what was and what is than what will be. They are often described as sociable, always open to the latest rumor or gossip in whatever area they have taken residence. Blue dragons tend to enjoy spending time with the mortal races, as often their perspective on events are quite varied and interesting. Blue dragons are often drawn to jobs and professions which let them interact with many people, such as storytellers and bards, which let them learn about the history of people and places they pass through.

Despite their social nature, it is often said to be difficult to truly grow close to a blue dragon. They see time in a very different way from other creatures, and thus their perspective rarely aligns with other mortal races. They tend to prioritize preservation and observation over action, and their loose definition of ‘on time’ can make them frustrating people to plan an event with. Still, those who manage to befriend a blue dragon will find that they are very attentive and preternaturally good at predicting one’s needs.

As chroniclers, blue dragons take great pride in their ability to not only record but preserver history. Some take to writing books, others create oral traditions, and still others will create works of art to capture moments in time for others to always remember. To a blue dragon history is something that should never be forgotten, and it is considered a great insult to question the veracity of their records.

Perhaps unsurprisingly blue dragons tend to make exceptional teachers and advisors. They do not often reveal themselves to others, but it is often possible to spot a blue dragon by their actions. Always be wary of the friendly gossip down the street, or the excitable professor who enjoys long talks with his students. They very well could be a blue dragon in disguise.

Physiology of the Blue Dragonflight

Blue dragons are wingless, with long serpentine bodies covered in scales of various shades of blue. Their long whiskers are extremely sensitive to the aether properties of the physical world, and they possess a heightened sense of causality which allows them to recognize places, people and events that will be of great importance to the current timeline. Their limbs are long and sturdy, and each of their five claws are sharp enough to cleave through dwarven steel as if it were paper.

They are the average size and mass among dragonflights, but their mass is stretched across their long, slender bodies. When they fly they ride on invisible currents of aether generated from the steady passage of time itself, almost seeming to swim through the sky. As they age a blue dragon's mane grows fuller, shifting from dark shades of blue to light, nearly white colors. Their whiskers grow over time as well, always reaching half their length and they are able to control them freely.

Dragoncraft of the Blue Flight

All full dragons possess the power of Dragoncraft, a power that wizards across the ages have attributed to being a lesser form of Archmagic. The blue dragonflight is known to possess the following powers. Though this is not a comprehensive list of abilities red dragons have been known to have, these are among the most common manifestations.

Chronokenesis - Time is malleable to a blue dragon, and as such Chronokenesis is considered the foundational dragoncraft of their flight. This ability can be broken down into three parts:

  1. Temporal Manipulation - Blue dragons are intimately aware of the passage of time around them, and possess the natural ability to influence time within a certain vicinity. They can cause time to slow, speed up, or even pause for themselves or others within their area of influence. This ability scales with age, with young dragons only able to pause time for a few seconds relative to them, and elder dragons able to hold a moment suspended in time indefinitely.
  1. Temporal Vision - Blue dragons can peer through time to see both the past and the future within their current timeline. This ability often utilizes an anchor, an object or person to focus on, which the dragon uses to trace the pathways of time that the person has been and will potentially take. It is common for blue dragons to utilize themselves or their current location as an anchor. Due to their role as Chroniclers a blue dragon can most easily peer through the past, where as the future is often blurry or difficult to decipher as the intricacies of fate and destiny fall more in line with the role of Red dragons.
  1. Temporal Traversion - Blue dragons can ‘shift’ themselves through time, either forward or backwards within their current timeline. While it is possible for blue dragons to travel forward into a future they have not yet experienced, it is like traveling through thick woods and foliage, whereas traveling between their current moment and points in the past is similar to taking a well trodden path. Young dragons may be able to travel a few minutes into their own past, where as Elder dragons could travel as far as they wish, and even shift between timelines as they desire.

Memento - Like Chronokenesis, Memento is one of the core abilities for Blue dragons in their role as Chroniclers. It allows a blue dragon to capture a moment in time as a crystal or gem, similar to a lore stone, which can be viewed and replayed as often as they wish. The duration and range a Memento can record is dependent on the age and power of the dragon. Young dragons may be able to capture a day within 100 feet of them, whereas Elder dragons could record most of a continent over the course of a hundred years. Time captured in a Memento is crisp and clear, perfectly preserved, and when using a Memento a person can walk through that moment as a ghost, an observer who can see everything but not interact with it. Most blue dragons collect Memento’s as a part of their larger hoard.

Aether Transduction - With their heightened awareness of a substance's alchemical properties, a blue dragon may choose to isolate and extract any aetheric property they desire, choosing to either infuse it into something else or potentially storing it for later use. The scale of this power is vast, with young dragons rarely able to do more than extract simple properties, and causing the thing they extracted it from to crumble to dust. Elder dragons have a very fine tuned sense of the alchemical principles involved in this ability, and can often extract, transfer and infuse without loss or damage to the objects they pull from. It is often theorized that Occult Alchemy was first inspired by this particular ability.

Transmutation Breath - A blue dragons breath weapon is not a raging fire, but rather a powerful surge of electrified mist which catalyzes a radical transmutation of anything it touches. Their breath can cause anything it hits to be turned into a base element, such as stone or even gold. The affects are often temporary, with the half life heavily dependent on the age of the dragon.
