The Golden Peacock Theater

The Three Sisters of the Plaza of Jeweled Arches are the Velvet Cabaret, the Jade Crane Bathhouse, and the Golden Peacock. The youngest of the sisters, raucous and chaotic, is the red Cabaret. The temperate middle sister is the green Bathhouse. The eldest and oft considered the haughtiest, is the noble Peacock. Called Golden, she is more black lacquer and enamel than anything else but marked out in cadmium yellow, royal yellow, and golden ornamentation. Those who fly overhead can see its beaten gold roof return the sun’s warmth.

All three were built by the same family, and the Peacock was originally a great library made public by that family. When the line failed, the holdings of the library were transferred to the Academy, and three people managed to purchase the building and convert it into three distinct performance spaces within the building. Since then, the theater has always been run by three people: an artistic director, a managing director, and a noble patron.

The Golden Peacock is dedicated to embracing the complexities of contemporary Kalzasi society and nurturing both artists and audiences, as it continues its legacy of creating a place of inclusion and a forum for ideas. In addition to the presentation of theatrical works, it offers an exciting series of lectures, debates, and conversations that showcase leading voices in the arts, politics, and academics.

The classical repertory is performed by the theater’s resident company. Newer works draw from that pool as well as other artists in the city. Occasionally, traveling troupes will be offered a place to perform, bringing outside voices to Kalzasi’s audiences, and the Theater. Outside the walls of the Theater, it partners with the Temple of the Fallen Skies to enact religious and pageant plays, with the Academy, and with the city-state’s government to send a traveling unit around the countryside to share Kalzasi’s artistic culture with those who do not live within its walls.

A note on theater in Kalzasi. Much cultural and artistic history has been lost over the millennia, but much more would have been lost without places like the Golden Peacock keeping them alive. Part of their mission includes researching and safeguarding the various traditions of the theater of the various races and various political bodies that have risen and fallen over the course of time.

All reasonable requests for special accommodations are met, whether that includes more space for wings or other.

Mainstage

On the main stage, whose audience seats three hundred, the classics are performed. These tend to be highly stylized, and there is no true distinction between acting, dancing, and singing. Fantastic make-up and costumes are as much a delight as the stories performed, which tend toward theatricalized literature, religious stories, and epics. The training for these styles is strict, and an evening’s program will often include several serious plays interrupted by shorter comedic plays. The audiences tend to be more literate, educated, or pretentious, as many nobles and well-to-do merchants will maintain subscriptions, whether they care about traditional Orkhan music and Hytori opera or not.

Small Stage

On the small stage, more contemporary and experimental works are performed for audiences up to one hundred. Realism and its subsequent breaks are explored on these boards with more modern music and, sometimes, no music at all. Though some of the texts still brought to life on the main stage are performed here as well, they tend to break from the traditional formats, going less for eternal universal themes for more topical ones. Tragedies may reflect upon things closer to home than the Sundering. Comedies may poke satirical fun at current politicians. While the city maintains the arts’ right to speak truth to power, the Theater’s noble angel must also be sure that the wrong feathers aren’t overly ruffled.

Salon

The salon is an informal performance space and restaurant. The audience sits at bars and tables with a view of a small stage where musical performances, dance-storytelling, and other, more intimate acts take place. There is some crossover here with performances by artists that otherwise perform at the Velvet Cabaret next door, though the repertory is less risqué—although sometimes not by much when the late-night acts begin. Some people will watch a show in one of the other spaces and come to the Salon for a drink, a bite to eat, some conversation, and something heavier on the entertainment than the didactic function.
