The Golden Peacock Theater
25th of Frost, Year 121 Steel

On the coast, during a certain queen's reign, a man celebrated the completion of his twenty-first year and the end of his apprenticeship to a gentlemanly band of pirates. The pirates' maid appeared and revealed that, as his nursemaid long ago, she made a mistake through being hard of hearing: mishearing his father's instructions, she apprenticed him to a pirate, instead of to a ship's pilot.

He had never seen any woman other than his nursemaid, and he believed her to be beautiful. The pirates knew better and suggested that he take her with him when he returned to civilization. He announced that, although it pained him, so strong was his sense of duty that, once free from his apprenticeship, he would be forced to devote himself to the pirates' extermination. He also pointed out that they were not successful pirates: since they were all orphans, they allowed their prey to go free if they too were orphans. He noted that word of this had got about, so captured ships' companies routinely claimed to be orphans. He invited the pirates to give up piracy and go with him, so that he need not destroy them, but the Pirate King said that, contrasted with respectability, piracy was comparatively honest. The pirates departed, leaving the young man and his maid. He saw a group of beautiful young girls approaching the pirate lair, and realized that his maid had misled him about her appearance. Sending her away, he hid before the girls arrived.

The girls burst exuberantly upon the secluded spot. He revealed himself, startling them. He appealed to them to help him reform. The girls were fascinated by him, but all rejected him, except one. She responded to his plea, chiding her sisters for their lack of charity. She offered him her pity, and the two quickly fell in love. The other girls discussed whether to eavesdrop or to leave the new couple alone, although they stole glances at the affectionate couple.

He warned the young ladies that his old associates would soon return, but before they could flee, the pirates arrived and captured the girls, intending to marry them. His new love interest warned the pirates that the girls' father was a high-ranking military officer, who soon arrived and introduced himself. He appealed to the pirates not to take his daughters, leaving him to face his old age alone. Having heard of the famous pirates, he pretended that he was an orphan to elicit their sympathy. The soft-hearted pirates released the girls, making him and his daughters honorary members of their band.

Aurin, having watched some of the pick-up rehearsals, knew how the first act ended, and so he pushed off from the wall at the back of the auditorium to sneak out early and hit the bar before the rush of the audience. It was a comic opera, a bit silly for his tastes, but the swordplay was interesting to watch, at least. He had left tickets for Carina and Imogen at will call and noted that they had been picked up, so he supposed he might see them if he stayed near the alcohol, even if Carina would probably go to the bathroom to snort something.

The orphan-centric pirate code made an awful lot of sense to Imogen. Everyone knew that pirates found frequent port in Ecith; fewer knew that the people of the old country were strongly invested in the welfare of the orphaned. At least, if her uncle's many wild tales about the continent were to be believed, which they weren't. It was a romantic notion, though; a ship of orphans, respecting only the sacred duty of all peoples to see to the welfare of the orphaned. And pirate shanties.

As the officer appeared, however, verisimilitude faded. If these were, indeed, pirates who had spent time in Ecith, what commissioned officer would they not hold in contempt? How in the name of all the dragon gods had he begat so many daughters? Was it only daughters, or did he somehow have another litter of sons, off fighting musical wars? And where was all of this supposed to be happening? Was she to believe that they had been cloistered their entire lives, and that's why the officer's daughter seemed so set on fucking the pirate-apprentice? Hard questions, indeed.

As the first act came to a close, Imogen leaned over to her companion. "The music's nice, but the plot...? I think I liked the other opera this playwright did better, you know, the one where there's a baron cursed to do one evil act daily lest his ancestor ghosts murder him? And he finds out that his elder brother isn't dead, and should have inherited his barony, so he entraps him into becoming baron and committing petty offenses every day, until the brother realizes that refusing to do a crime is tantamount to suicide, which is illegal, and the curse is broken? No? Maybe they played that when you were out here last..."

The Orkhan girl shrugged and stood, unbothered by the rush of people getting out of their seats to head for the concessions. She had never had any trouble making her way through a-

"Excuse me. Miss, ah, Imogen and Carina?"

Imogen turned at the question, coming face-to-face with a theater usher whose broad, stiff smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "Uh. Hi? That's us."

"Sorry to bother you, but could you come down to the front desk? We have a black wooden box, which someone said you accidentally left on the floor at the will call window?"

Well, that explained the strange look. Obviously neither of them had brought any wooden boxes into the theater. Why would- oh.

"Oh! Uh, great. That's great. Didn't even notice I left it behind. So sorry, I'll go pick it up right away."

Carina's mind wandered through many questions, though the plot holes of the story were the least of her worries. She felt lucky she was in ballets rather than opera; it seemed miserable to sing all the time, though singers might have thought the same of standing on the very tip of your toes and hopping around on stage, too. Regardless of her opinion of singing and pirates, she knew one very simple fact.

She was far too sober for this.

Carina stood the moment intermission hit, ignoring her companion's monologue on the content of the story, and was about to delve into the crowd of people — many of whom a great deal larger than the tiny ballerina — until they were interrupted by the usher. As Imogen took care of the usher's request, she too realized it was likely the package they had been waiting for, and for the moment, she allowed that to be the Orkhan's responsibility.

"You can retrieve it, right? I need to..." She trailed off. "I need to get in the proper headspace to appreciate this performance." Not that she thought anyone would try to stop her. "You can join me if you want." She winked, knowing full well that Imogen would likely decline drugs as she usually did, though the offer was always open. There was alcohol for sale, anyway, and so Carina split away from her companion and beelined for the bathroom with its smooth, available counterspace.

Moderately intoxicated and ready for the next act, Carina found herself just a few minutes later heading towards the bar. Imogen wasn't there yet, and she briefly considered looking for her before she spotted Aurin. She sidled up next to the man with a smile on her face and dilated eyes.

"Aurin! You didn't tell me how... distinct this show was. I have considered drinking just so I can perhaps better understand the plot."

Aurin could only smirk when Carina's tell-tale eyes came into view, followed by her remark. He didn't disagree, but Imogen had wanted pirates and this was the only pirate show he knew about at the moment.

"Everyone's a critic," he said, rolling his eyes, but he shrugged and nodded before taking a sip of his dark spirits. "It's times like these I almost wish I was back at the Velvet Cabaret. At least there you have a decent chance of the aria being spiced up with some tits, eh? If Imogen hates it too, we can always head next door for other entertainments. They stock a few things that will let your imagination dictate the hallucinations if you mix them just right."

His smirk widened into a Cheshire grin. At least there, Carina could nurse her high while Imogen sampled the drinks and he could continue to develop relationships with them outside of the theater proper; the most important business took place outside the office. He had known that already when he began to work for Madame Lunaria, its truth underscored by the scores of nobles and merchants who used the cabaret to transact business, both legitimate and of questionable legality.

"Where is Ms. Ward anyway?" He glanced over her shoulder, but the Orkhan woman would have stood out. She wouldn't be the only Orkhan in the audience, but they were much easier to track through the crowd. She had a similar air about her, one that Aurin's intuition read as secrets, and that sort of thing always piqued his interest. He wasn't necessarily attempting to screw them over, but he did want to figure them out.

The Orkhan woman in question fought her way through the crowd, making for the front office. It wasn't especially difficult- most people have a deep-seated instinct to shift out of the way when someone much larger passes- but it was still pretty slow. Crowds move through theaters like molasses, and Imogen's size and experience with intermission crowds could only speed up the Brownian motion of the whole by so much.

She'd turned down Carina's invitation to get high in the bathroom, of course. She still had no idea what was in the damn box, but if she'd been sent to guard it, it was evidentially worth stealing. The Golden Peacock seemed a little bit too upscale for the average sneak-thief to want to try their luck, but Imogen Ward did not believe in taking chances unless there was an upside. Or it would be really funny. Anyway, it was a time for sobriety, and no mistake.

After what felt like an eternity, she reached the front desk, and patiently waited behind a handful of stragglers who were trying to negotiate this-or-that accommodation or get late refunds on tickets or whatever other nonsense occupied their night. As they dispersed, she gave the woman behind the counter the biggest, blandest smile she could manage.

"Good evening. I'm sorry- terribly sorry- but I believe I lost a large black box here earlier? I'm told it was turned in?"

The interest of the clerk sharpened at that. "Yes, I think so. Hold on-"

The woman ducked behind the counter, and Imogen heard a small grunt. A moment later, she hefted a black box onto the counter. The package was coated in faded, scratched lacquer, with an old and vanishing pattern of lilies and other lake-growing flowers in a set of antique vases, in the Kalzasi style.

(The little sunburst is better-edited in person, though. This is just an artist's rendition.)

"Is this... your box, then?"

Wow, this was a really smooth pickup. There wouldn't be any questions about this hand-off, that's for sure. What the actual fuck were they thinking? Whoever had arranged all this?

"Aha, yeah, yes that's... that's my box. You didn't open it, did you?" Smooth as hell, Imogen.

"No, the latches are stuck." the receptionist replied candidly, not attempting to hide the fact that the staff had tried to open the thing, "Look, whatever's in here, it's not something banned from the theater, is it? No weapons, so forth...?"

Imogen had to act fast. It was time... to lie. "Weapons? Oh no, no, absolutely not. These are, well... my friend's grandfather, he loved coming to the theater. Knew all of the operas by heart, and had a keen memory for the players, too. About the only thing he had a keen memory for, at the end. With his oldest son selling the family's vineyard to go sailing, and then of course he lost his home... but he did love the theater. So he put in his will, see, that he wanted to-"

"Please do not tell me you're carrying a jar of ashes to throw inside the theater."

Oh, fuck. She hadn't even realized that fear might arise naturally from this narrative. "No! No, absolutely not. In fact, that's why the urn is inside this locked box, to make sure nobody gets so grief-stricken that they, uh, do that."

"I really don't think you can-"

"No, you're absolutely right, it's crazy we thought this was a good idea. I was opposed from the start. Let me just let my friend know that I'm leaving."

Imogen grabbed the box before the receptionist had the chance to pick apart her Gordian knot of lies and deception and hustled back into the crowd, drawing more than a few annoyed or curious looks. She had entertained, in the past few weeks, the notion that the pick-up was going to be suave and cool, forgotten in a moment, no records, two ships passing in the night. Now her main priority was to find Carina and evacuate the building before she was arrested for... whatever crimes you could be arrested for that involved suspiciously dead grandfathers and black boxes.

She made for the balcony bathroom, hoping to catch Carina still crushing her powders.

"Hah, it's not that bad. I think she might even be enjoying it, but I don't think we can stay for long." Carina leaned against the bar. "I thought she'd come here. How long could it take to pick up a box?" Even if she'd said too much, as soon as Aurin saw whatever it was that Imogen had to snag from the counter was going to give it away. She'd have rather gone to the Velvet Cabaret, but there were strict instructions not to leave the box unattended, and that would mean Imogen would have to be somewhat sober the entire night, which wasn't as fun.

"I wonder if she's looking for me," the dancer posited before she wandered off in the direction of the bathrooms again. There were still enough people milling about, but she'd recognize Imogen in a heartbeat, even if she weren't the tallest head in the room. Unlike in Zaichaer, Kalzasi was full of people who towered over her orkhan friend, who was already intimidating enough. Zaichaer did have its fair share of tall nonhumans, but it felt so much rarer to see them at the theater, even for Coven business. It took only a few moments for her to spot her.

"There you are," Carina sidled up next to Imogen, who carried a lacquered black box she had never seen before. "Aurin wanted to go to the Velvet Cabaret. Do you want to come? You'd have to stay sober, but..." Carina shrugged and laughed, and then lowered her voice. "Not like anyone back home will know if you had a few drinks while watching their precious cargo."

Once Carina performed her casual pirouette, his eyebrow rose: Imogen and the box. His interest was piqued. When he had caught someone attempting to open the thing, he had put a stop to that, but he could only tell so much about what was inside via his Semblance trick. He immediately followed Carina, wending his way through the shoals of a crowd with practiced ease. She was a squirrelly one to trail, however, so he didn't hear what she had said before he caught up with her and the Orkhan woman, who now had The Box.

His smile was sincere enough. The ladies were entertaining and he knew they weren't in Kalzasi for long; best to take advantage of their company while it was available.

"There she is. You know, if you bring luggage with you, next time, I can just lock it in my office for you so you don't have to worry about it." The theater had security, but it wasn't considered a high-risk sort of a place. It was hardly the Central Bank of Kalzasi. Soon he hoped to have a hiding hole more secure than even that place, not because he worried about his gold, but because there were more precious things than gold and one did want one's assets as liquid as possible.

"Getting out of here with the pirate's booty while the getting's good?" he asked, nodding to her chest, though he didn't seem particularly interested in it. The fact that she had retrieved it at intermission made it likely that she didn't plan to stay for the rest of the show, however. He wouldn't mind cutting out of there either. If he wanted to, he could easily watch it the next night it was performed. Tickets for himself weren't really a thing he had to worry about anymore.

"Hey, Carina, and... good to see you again, Mr., er, Aurin."

No doubt she wanted to make a break from the Golden Peacock right now, but that wasn't all. Now that she could touch the box, she knew why the staff hadn't been able to open it- the lock was a very specific sort of mechanism, and she doubted anyone in Kalzasi outside of a senior Circle mage could open the thing without breaking it (that would require a much less senior mage, or perhaps a small axe). But... she wanted to know what the fuck it was they'd been so roughly dispatched to obtain with such vague, general language.

"Probably for the best. I, uh, might have told the people at the front desk that this box has your granddad's ashes in it." Well, Imogen had been known to lie about her own parents' deaths before, but this was moving in a whole new terrible direction. "Aurin, I wonder if you might know a private place where I could check on this? I just want to make sure that everything's inside, you know." She did not mention that she had no idea what "everything" would be, and indeed had been expressly forbidden from looking inside. If the bosses got mad about that, they could damn well send someone with less of an instinct for curiosity next time.

"Perhaps you two can continue your business while I just take a peek, eh?"

Well, that was getting pretty close to just saying that the contents were secret and she didn't want Aurin seeing them, but Imogen wasn't sure what else to do. Unfortunately, opening it back at their hotel room simply wasn't possible. On account of the fact that-

"I know this sounds pretty weird, but I need a, uh... large room with no windows to open it."
