Appearance
Raithen is surprisingly short for both parental races, topping out at only six feet at his head, though his wings give him the appearance of being taller. His hair is a tawny blond, kept short enough not to be in his way when he is practicing his profession, but long enough that he can appear fashionable when he accompanies his mother. With eyes, the color of heavy clouds, and a ready smile, he might have been popular, were he not followed everywhere by the great, feathered reminders of his mixed blood. His skin is tanned by his time spent out of doors and his wings are the same varied shades of blond and brown as his hair.
Personality
The young Availea grew up in the certainty of his mother’s love and the equal certainty of his outcast status. Her acceptance of him kept the worst of the prejudice off him, at least until he was old enough to have wrapped a shell of nonchalance around himself. In truth, he doesn’t mind his place, recognizing that in it he was able to enjoy all the ease and privilege of the highest realms of society without the expectation of a legitimate child. He is easy-going, playful, and, on occasion, surprisingly intent on his goals.
History
Raithen was born to a noblewoman of the Solunarium court, the product of a brief dalliance with an Avialea man who flew off after, never to return. At least, as far as his son is aware. Raised in the court, though often not in any recognized way, he was loved by his mother, treated almost as the one child she was allowed to show affection without fear of it making him soft. Surprisingly to everyone, Raithen turned out stronger and more flexible than his legitimate siblings. In public, he has an easy manner, regardless of company, but learned early how to temper his humor when in the company of those requiring obeisance.
Watching his siblings struggle through the machinations of the regal court, Raithen considered himself blessed and took full advantage of the low expectation, high opportunity environment he was placed in. He took lessons with his siblings but was also allowed to learn various fighting arts, and, when he was old enough, requested, and was granted rune magic.
Upon reaching adulthood he joined the Royal Guard, having just enough rank and reputation to do so and hoping to bring what small honor to his family he could among their ranks. He served four years, proving himself and earning praise from his mother, earning the ire of his siblings but also the ability to be rarely at home to have to deal with it.
When he left the Guard he decided that remaining away from home most of the time was probably the wisest course, and, finding himself in no short supply of wanderlust, he signed up with a few bounty guilds and a respectable mercenary band.
