9th Day of Ash, 122nd Year of the Age of Steel

Sabrione stepped out in front of them, shoulders square. She had the faint frown on her face of someone about to deliver bad news to people who really could do fuck all about it. Masagh, Cleon, Calliope, and Riah stood in the warehouse of the Creth Compound anxiously. Sabrione’s appearance did nothing to assuage that anxiety.

“Okay here it is.” Sabrione said, kicking a crate out from a wall and perching one foot on the edge. She waved them all to relax. “We’ve got knowledge of some rich mage who killed a few goblins. She lives up in the Southside mansion district.” Sabrione began, looking stressed.

Masagh settled on the corner of a crate, leaning back against the wall and adjusting his sword. “What’s it to us?” He couldn’t keep the aggressiveness from his tone. He was done with goblin favors, or whatever Sabrione liked to think of them as. They had already struggled through two tough nights. Masagh could tell in the heavy look she gave him that she was reading between the lines in his attitude.

“These goblins were allegedly carrying wands with our mark.” Sabrione said. “She’s a mage of some renown. So we can’t be letting these bread crumbs lead back to us.” Sabrione said.

“Okay, so what’s the plan.” Cleon said as he gave Masagh a hard look. Masagh had been about to open his mouth and protest further. Cleon and the others didn’t know about the near disastrous operation he and Sabrione had carried out a few nights before. He was just prickly about authority. If he had known, Masagh was sure he would have just as many protests about this operation.

They were skirting a fine line, with all this disruptive activity, and Sabrione knew it. That’s why she looked so uncomfortable.

“She’s apparently accomplished enough to give us all a hard time. So we will go when she is away at the Academy teaching.” Sabrione said heavily.

“That is when?” Riah asked. The rest remained silent.

“During the day.” Sabrione replied shortly.

“Gods below.” Masagh shook his head.

“Cloud cover today, we will be fine. We will spend barely any time out in direct sunlight.” Sabrione said, cutting the air with her hand. “There’s going to be no danger in that. I will be bringing us through slipspace to right outside the home, I’ve already scouted the area.” Sabrione pressed on as the others all shifted uncomfortably.

“Look I get it, and there’s a stable attached to the mansion that I’ll bring us into. We won’t have to worry about it.” Sabrione said.

“I remember another mage we tried raiding during the day…” Masagh said, letting the words drift into the silence.

“This won’t be like that.” Sabrione said. “Besides, it’s got to be done.”

There wasn’t much to be said after that.

Masagh stood and crossed his arms. Sabrione had been backed into a corner here, and there was no use reiterating what she already knew. “Do we know anything about the mansion?”

Sabrione looked grateful that he was done questioning the mission and had moved onto logistics. “Two stories, no courtyards. It’s an H shape and the stable is in the north-western corner. We think there’s a basement only because why would there not be.” She said. “I don’t know where these wands would be, that’s something we figure out on the scene.”

“What is the plan to get out?” Cleon asked.

“We gather up and I bring us out via slipspace.” Sabrione said shortly.

“So you have to be saving enough aether to do it.” Masagh reminded her, raising an eyebrow.

That could be dangerous. If this mage had enough defenses in her home to require five Knights to raid it, Sabrione would be pressed on her aether anyway. If she was crippling herself by saving some for an exfiltration, it was just that much more dangerous for her.

“Yes, I know.” Sabrione nodded. “That’s why I keep you people around. Now, are we all ready?”

They were, of course they were. They had all their gear and weapons. They had all been prepared for a mission when showing up to this brief. Were they prepared for this mission? Masagh had the feeling this was the type of mission you couldn’t really be prepared for. There were too many unknowns. It felt like walking into a gladiator arena.

“I’ll take point.” Masagh muttered. If it had to happen, it had to happen. The least he could do is dive in and show some unity after being so divisive in the brief.

“Alright.” Sabrione said, giving him a brief look that nonetheless spoke volumes. “Masagh and I will lead. Find and secure the gate, Masagh. Cleon and Calliope come through next. Riah, you take rear.”

They all nodded or spoke hushed affirmations. Masagh drew his blade and touched the iron reverently. It had seen him through some rough times, and it would see him through this mission as well. The iron shimmered with an oily texture, silhouettes of ghoulish figures packed along the blade. He blinked down at it. For a moment he thought the tiny face of Cynfael swirled into sharp and exact relief. When he found the spot again, he was not there.

Sabrione had already opened a portal into slipspace. Masagh hurried to step through with her, Cleon and the others following close behind. The space in-between all things was not as frightening as it had been the first time. Looking around in that void Masagh had to admit that it was not because it had become more hospitable, it was simply more familiar.

Sabrione opened a tear into a shadowy space he could not make out.

He stepped through, blade first. His feet touched hard packed earth and the smell of animal accosted his nostrils as he slipping into the space. He did not pause outside the portal to glance around. Masagh kept moving forward, taking in the space as he did so.

It was a large stable for a private residence. Six stalls on either side of a wide open center shed grey light in through slits in the walls. The gate was lifted and he saw light spilling in from under the double doors. Masagh veered off in that direction even as the others were stepping into reality again. Sabrione was slipping over one of the empty stall gates to peer through the slits in the wall. Only two stalls were occupied. Both seemed to be old ponies that only snorted and tossed their heads a bit at the new arrivals.

Masagh found the crack in the gate and peered out, sword tight in his grip. The garden outside was lined with well trimmed bushes and a small fountain sat in the center of a tiled patio complete with clusters of chairs and round tables. All was empty. Beyond a set of three stairs lead to an ornate door in the side of the mansion. With a glance he judged the entrance to be about thirty feet from the stable. The whole property was lined with a tall wrought iron fence infested with vines and roses. It was a perimeter designed to look beautiful but also to keep the masses out of sight.

“Clear.” Masagh said, glancing back at the others. Cleon, Calliope, and Riah were trotting to him. Sabrione was swinging herself over the gate of the empty stall.

“Side’s clear too.” She said. “Okay-.” She moved to take Masagh’s position and peer out the crack in the stable gate. “Masagh, Cleon, you two push across this yard and get us through the door. Calliope, you got the rear guard. Riah and I will keep an eye on the flanks. Remember to keep your eyes peeled on these windows and bare spots in the fence.” Sabrione ordered, her voice harsh and measured in a cadence of authority.

She was in her element.

Masagh looked at Cleon, waiting for his signal. Cleon lifted the latch of the gate and winked at him. They pushed the gate open and charged across the lawn. After two steps Masagh knew he wouldn’t be roasting into dust, the cloud cover held up. At least for now.

The door was ornate, but it was still practical. It held no panes of glass and it did not compromise thickness for beauty anywhere. But they were strong and had very large weapons. Cleon threw his foot into the door. A loud crack rang out as the thing shuddered. “What if there are servants home?” Masagh asked, staring at the still resolute door.

“Well, not much to do for it now.” Cleon muttered, giving another kick.

Masagh looked around and found a window above a flower bed. He trotted over and picked up one of the metal and wood folding chairs. “Hang on.” He said. He swung it around and into the window, causing glass to crash inside.

“You could be jumped in there!” Sabrione hissed at him as Masagh clambered up and through the window head first. He tumbled onto a table and rolled onto the floor. It was some sort of lounge room. The table had rare ornaments and framed paintings. Masagh glanced back at the window and his heart sank.

A tendril of smoke was drifting towards the ceiling from the window frame. Upon closer inspection he saw runes etched along the frame, the slant of the script hinted at some elvish dialect. A ward.

A broken ward to be more precise.

He cursed under his breath and went to the door. Pulling the latch he yanked it open and let his companions inside. They had all piled up outside the door and entered in quick succession.

“Weaponmaster, we’ve got a problem.” Masagh muttered. “Wards on the windows, probably the door too.” He pointed to where the now blackened runes were still trailing a tendril of smoke.

“Shit, we’ve got to hurry.” No sooner had she said it than the sound of shattering glass rang out ominously from across the room.

They all turned. Tall and thin, a vaguely humanoid twisting of wood and chainmail was stepping through the glass of what Masagh had assumed was a display case. It was not an artistic suit of armor as he had suspected, but some sort of armored golem. It stepped away from the chamber it had been resting in and drew a huge axe from its side. The head tilted and regarded them.

“Oh.” Sabrione said.

Masagh and Riah rushed forward. The golem moved to meet the charge. Riah went left around a leather upholstered couch and Masagh stepped over the coffee table to the right. The golem turned left to face Riah.

“Find the study or the store room!” Sabrione was saying, all attempts at stealth abandoned. “Cleon, Calliope take the basement. I’ve got upstairs!”

Masagh barely heard her. Riah had managed to get her sword up in front of her in time to block the massive axe. He heard her grunt as the weapon came down hard and sent her sprawling. The thing reared back immediately, shrugging off whatever exertion that had taken. Masagh slid up beside it and his blade descended hard on its arm. The chainmail covering it halted any permanent damage, but he made the thing lose grip with one hand on the axe. The head of the axe wavered in the air as the golem turned its attention on him. It shook its arm free of his blade imperiously. Then it slammed the flat of its hand into his sternum and Masagh felt his feet lift from the ground.

He slammed into the coffee table and it collapsed under him. Rolling, Masagh attempted to take a breath after his had been knocked out of him on the impact. His throat burned and his chest heaved. On his hands and knees he wretched up nothing. The impact area radiated pain and it was all he could do for a moment to groan and curl his body around the pain.

Using his sword he struggled up from his hands and knees. There was a crash as the side door to the lounge burst off it’s hinges. Another golem stepped into the room. This one was smaller and carried a sword and shield. It turned its gaze upon them and began to sprint for Riah, whom was in a deadly struggle with the xe wielding golem.

“Riah! Switch!” Masagh shouted and vaulted over the couch. He dropped his shoulder into the new golem’s side and sent it ricocheting into the wall. Plaster and wallpaper crumbled in the impact. Masagh raised his blade and stepped forward to the axe wielding golem. “Come on you big bastard.” He brought his weapon down hard on the thing’s knee from behind.

He felt the blade bite into wood and heard the crunch of it. The golem collapsed only a fraction. It swung a hand around to swat at him, but Masagh had learned that trick already. He ducked and felt the forearm graze his hood. Then he stomped out at the knee he had attacked and succeeded in bringing the thing to one knee.

It twisted to swipe at him with the axe. Masagh dove backwards and saw Riah dart out from behind the golem. She had heard him and she wasn’t running. Good. As the newest knight and relatively unblooded, Riah had much to prove. Masagh was grateful she was at least quick in the attempt to do so.

He kicked his feet back, rolling back over his head as the axe golem righted itself and swung a powerful blow overhead. Its weapon embedded itself with force in the hardwood flooring, sinking five inches deep. As Masagh got his feet back under him the golem yanked viciously on the axe, spraying the room with freshly made kindling.

“Riah we got to find the wands!” Masagh barked to his companion.

“…Yea…” she said after a minute, clearly consumed in the fight against the smaller golem.

Masagh stepped forward to meet axe with claymore as he raised his weapon. The fight deteriorated into a hectic dance as Masagh wove under and around the axe blows. The golem was strong and durable, but there was a cadence to its attacks. The fight skirted around the room, leaving ruin and broken things in the wake of the heavy axehead. If they didn’t find a way to neutralize these golems and find the wands soon, they would have to add what must be a master mage to the mix.

Masagh couldn’t block the axe. It would exhaust him if not just break through his strength and cut him in half anyway. He needed to find something to capitalize on, a weakness or some advantage he had. He slid backwards out of the range of the crescent blade as it swung past. That way easy, he had speed and mobility on the golem. And he fought dirty.

The next swipe of the axe, Masagh ducked low and dodging inside the golem’s swing. He brought his claymore up into the thing’s elbow and felt the solid hit. Before the golem could make the predictable swipe with its arm, Masagh ducked out of reach again. They played their game of cat and mouse while Riah sparred with the other golem across the room.

Another opportunity came when the golem slammed the axe into one of the couches and the weapon became stuck in the metal ceilings below the cushion. As the golem jerked at the thing Masagh darted in. He brought his sword down hard on the same elbow of the golem and felt a surge of victory as the limb separated. The claw still grasped the axe, but the golem let go with the other hand to swipe at him. Masagh ducked that attack as well, now that he knew how it would happen.

He brought the blade up across the golem’s head and saw the thing dislodge. It cracked back and twisted, attached but facing the ceiling. The golem fumbled for the weapon its severed arm still gripped. Masagh kicked the handle out of the way. It bent in the opposite direction like some sort of janky level.

The ghoul brought the weapon down hard on the opposite shoulder with a snarl. The claymore bit through the limb completely and he toppled forward with the weight of the strike. Masagh and the golem toppled to the floor on the other side of the couch. Masagh struggled out from under the ungainly thing as it flailed uselessly about.

Riah was battering at the shielded golem with what Masagh could see were increasingly desperate strikes. Moving up behind the thing he cut the sword arm off at the shoulder also, the wood of it chipping and fracturing. The golem spun about, immediately switching tactics and shoving the shield at him. Battering it away, Masagh created the opening Riah needed to take the thing’s head off. It continued to try to strike at him, but with no precision. Masagh easily side stepped it and shoved it down.

Together he and Riah dropped their blades into it until its torso was torn into pieces and it stopped moving.

“Fuck, good work.” Masagh breathed heavily, nodding vaguely to Riah. She was staring at him with wide fearful eyes.

“They’re fighting upstairs, I heard them shouting!” She said, looking around for a staircase. “We need to go help.”

“No.” Masagh heard the harsh authority in his voice and reeled it in. “They’re doing the job, and we need to be doing ours. Come on, look for a study or a store room.” He grabbed her shoulder and lead her gently towards the door that the golem had come from.

She looked flustered and worried, but she followed. He had to stop his rushing feet and raise the blade in front of himself. The hallway lined the side of the house, with windows bringing light into the rich red carpet. Masagh yanked the heavy blinds shut at each window before stepping across them. It would be just his luck to battle two golems just to burn to a crisp rushing past a window.

Riah was kicking open doors as they went. The moment the window had broken and Masagh saw the wards burning, the mission had gone from a stealthy snatch and grab to a quick and hard raid. No longer were any of them worried about stealth or leaving things as they were. This was only going to succeed with speed and intensity. So he barely glanced in the rooms as they went, eager to get to their objective and be gone.

So he was already moving on to the next room when Riah muttered “Hang on. Look.” At the door of what had appeared to be some small side art galleria, made for intimate cocktail parties. Masagh stopped and turned back.

“What?”

“A door, over behind those curtains.” Riah said, looking to him for guidance.

Masagh returned to her side and gazed into the room. Across the room there was indeed a wooden door hidden behind a pair of intricately embroidered curtains. “On your guard.” He whispered, stepping into the room.

Together they crossed the galleria carefully. It was clearly a heavily defended home and they couldn’t afford for anyone to get tangled up in any of the defenses long. Masagh yanked the embroidered curtain aside. It was a deep green and bore some sort of intricate golden knot work pattern. He inspected the latch carefully.

There was a lock, heavy and large, but no runes. Masagh stepped back and planted his foot under the lock, hard. The door leapt inward and he stepped forward into a cramped study sort of room. There was a pair of high shelves reaching the ceiling where a brass and glass lantern flickered to light when he walked in. The glass was engraved with rune work and across from him was a display cabinet of books and scrolls. A quick glance at the shelves to either side showed books on the arcane, but nothing rarer than the Creth library held. Standard academic publications for Gel’Grandal. Masagh stepped past them to examine the glass-paned cabinet.

“Weird this place had only that lock as a defense, eh?” He muttered over his shoulder. The cabinet seemed to be unlocked as well, with a simple latch to open. He flipped it and glanced over his shoulder. “Riah come look at-“

Riah was halfway to the ceiling, her legs kicking out in the air wildly. The green curtain had twined itself around her neck and was dragging her up. Parts of the embroidery were illuminated now, and Masagh could see the etching of a serpent had been hidden in the design. He rushed across the small storage room and grabbed at her legs to lift her. She gasped another breath and Masagh felt the soft caress of the curtain sliding up to coil around his leg.

He tossed his blade into the air and invoked the a dancing spell. It spun around and severed the curtain only inches above Riah’s head. She toppled down onto him and they both went careening into the storage room. The curtain immediately tightened its grip on his leg. Riah was gurgling and choking now as the cloth twined around them like some sort of velvet python. Masagh sat up and abandoned his attempts to free his leg. He wrapped fingers around the coiled cloth about her neck and yanked it away from her airway.

“Pull, Riah, pull!” He hissed. Together they freed her head from the twining cloth. While it was able to create pressure around their limbs, clearly suffocation and hanging were the intended devices of neutralizing a threat. Masagh brought out his dagger and began to cut away at the velvet until finally it fell dormant again.

“This place is hell.” Riah muttered, laying on her side and heaving in shuddering gasps.

“Yea, real nice afternoon.” Masagh grunted. He sat there for the spoon of three breaths and then struggled to his feet. The cabinet’s contents had a few interesting looking spell scrolls and a few less reputable books on magic, but no wands.

“Come on, we’ve got to search the rest of the floor.” Masagh said. He helped her to her feet.

Together they left the storage room. Continuing through the house they didn’t come across anything of note until they reached the main entrance hall. Masagh and Riah were about halfway across the hall when Cleon and Calliope come bursting out of the upstairs hallway and start sprinting down the staircase. Sabrione was right behind them.

“What the-“ Masagh began but the question died in his throat as a pair of huge tigers the color of molten lava appeared at the top of the staircase.

“Light it up! We can’t find the wands, gotta burn the whole place.” Sabrione was saying as she took the stairs three at a time. One tiger gave chase and the other simply vaulted off the second landing to slide to a halt between Masagh and Riah and the door.

Masagh’s heart sunk when he saw it was not a tiger the color of molten lava, it was a tiger made of molten lava. A spirit bound by some highly powerful summoner. The blade came up before him without thought. The tiger focused its dark red eyes on him. The soul that stared into his own possessed no fear.

It pounced. Masagh tucked and rolled to the side. As the tiger passed by he swiped out with his blade. Probably the only thing that saved the blade was the fact that it was a pact enhanced weapon. The tip raked along the tiger spirit’s side and white hot magma spilled out onto the floor. The thing roared and stood up, turning back to Riah and Masagh. It prowled, showing them its uninjured side.

“Riah, go set some fires.” Masagh said, and he was surprised to hear the even tone in his voice. That icy cold calm that seemed to only extend to his voice when he was in peril had settled in. She looked at him and apparently did not see the fear in his face, because she nodded quickly.

“Right.” She said and turned to sprint towards the nearest door. The tiger’s gaze shifted to her and Masagh lunged quickly. They clashed in a flash of lava and iron. He had to keep this one occupied while Riah set the fires.

“Get back as quick as you can!” Masagh yelled to her retreating back as he threw himself out of the way of another attack.

He could make out Sabrione and the other two fighting with the other tiger spirit on the stairs, but his focus could not very from the beast in front of him long enough to register any details. He was dodging white hot flame and claws every other heartbeat. His mind was icy calm even as he knew he could not keep up the cadence of this.

The knight threw his blade in the air even as he tore a duplicate from it. Raising it, the blade caught the paw that was coming for his head. He spun and flung it to the side, sending flecks of lava splattering the marble floor. He turned and ran as the tiger gave chase. Over his head a smoking Cleon summersaulted through the air to smash into the front door.

“We need to get the hell out of here, Sabrione!” Calliope said, stabbing the other tiger in the gut before vaulting off the stairs ten feet up and tumbling to the marble below.

Masagh spun and brought the edge of his claymore across the tiger’s snout, making it stagger back and roar. The dancing blade darted in and stabbed it in the shoulder. More lava pulsed from the wound. It was becoming more and more dangerous to fight these things as they bled.

“I’ll get us out when Riah returns!” Sabrione yelled.

The tiger lunged at Masagh, his maw opening wide. The dancing blade darted down and stabbed the thing through the tongue, blocking the attack. It pawed at him and Masagh blocked the blow with the flat of his blade. The heat was immediately unbearable. He looked over his shoulder and saw he was backed into a corner with nowhere to go but through the molten beast.

This was it, the hellish end. Masagh thought that at least it wasn’t the sun that took him. He hoped Sabrione and the others would be able to escape.

Then Cleon appeared and with a grunt he brought his claymore down on the beast’s neck. The head toppled to the ground a half heartbeat before the body did. Masagh quickly let go of the duplicate as it was brought down to mingle with the oozing magma. He stared at Cleon as his dancing blade slid back into his grasp.

“Thanks.”

“We have to get the fuck out of here. Mage is riding hard up the drive.” Cleon shouted to Sabrione, not even bothering to respond to him. Riah came running in from the opposite direction than she had left. Smoke was coiling through the doorways into the main hall.

“Done! Let’s go, let’s get the hell out of here!” She yelled, gaping at the fallen tiger for a moment. They all gathered in the center of the room as a horse’s gallop gained in volume.

Sabrione still fending off the remaining tiger spirit glanced down at her people all cloistered together and stepped off the ledge. She did not fall. She disappeared.

Then with a rush of air she reappeared behind them. “Through the slipspace, let’s go!” She yelled, grabbing Riah and shoving her into a portal. They all scrambled through and Sabrione brought up the rear. A tiger’s head burst through the tear in reality as Sabrione closed it, mouth agape and snarling for vengeance. They all recoiled for a moment.

The head, however, just gently drifted to the side, droplets of lava leaking behind it. The angry red eyes stared ahead, unseeing. Sabrione reached out with her sword and shoved the thing away, off into the void.

They tumbled out of the other end of the slipspace back into the warehouse of the Creth Compound exhausted and bloody. Masagh collapsed onto one of the crates and drove his sword home quickly before he simply dropped it. “That house… Who is that paranoid?” He breathed.

“Those curtains!” Riah exclaimed, rubbing her neck. She had simply sat right where she stepped out.

“Did anyone find the wands?” Cleon asked, he was leaning against the wall with his hands on his knees.

“Not us, bunch of books and scrolls, but no wands.” Riah said. She buried her face in her hands and rubbed her temples gingerly.

“Still glad you took the oath?” Calliope muttered to her from where she had laid out across a pair of bolts of linen. Her eyes were closed and she was breathing deeply.

Sabrione was the only one of them standing upright still. “Absolute shit show, but all that magic isn’t going to withstand a house on fire so…” She finished lamely. She walked over to a barrel and sat on it, grimacing at nothing.

“I found a study and a private library, couldn’t find the damn wands.” So I set fire to a pair of bookshelves.” Sabrione croaked. That’s when those damn tigers came out.

“Basement wasn’t much more than a wine cellar.” Calliope said.

“Yea, that’s why we joined you upstairs, Weaponmaster.” Cleon said.

Sabrione grunted and turned to Riah. “You set those fires right?”

“Yea yea. Set a bunch of stuff on fire. It was easy after I went back and got that damned curtain and set it ablaze.” Riah muttered.

“Curtain?”

“Enchanted curtain tried to kill us.” Masagh muttered.

“You were fighting a damn curtain and we had a pair of fire tiger spirits?” Calliope said indignantly.

“Not like you had those to yourself, did you?” Masagh snorted. “And I remember fighting a pair of golems you all vanished for so yea, I’ll take my damn curtain. Besides, it almost killed Riah.”

“Yea, not a great day…” Riah said, finally sounding like she had her breathing under control.

“What a shitshow.” Cleon breathed, closing his eyes and finally slumping down.

Masagh closed his eyes also. He didn’t have the energy to even continue complaining.

“Yea yea, we all made it out.” Sabrione grunted, standing back up. “We’ll hold open elections for the new Weaponmaster and you can all find someone that will keep you nice and safe in the training ring, shall we? I’m going to make my report…”

Masagh smiled, enjoying the feeling of the cool flagstone under his head. No more flaming tigers to threaten combustion, just the familiar damp and dark. He listened to the sound of Sabrione’s footsteps disappearing into the distance.

The four knights didn’t speak again for a long time. They were each comforted by the presence of the others, but kept their silent relief at still being in one piece to themselves.
