Meeting the Master

A Doomed Soul is Afforded a Second Chance

The Luxium represents the upper half and primary seat of the Solunarian Capital and one of the dual-cities that comprises Solunarium Proper. Situated between the foot of the volcanic Mount Sorokyn and the wide River Vasta, this above-ground metropolis boasts five thriving districts beneath the shadow of the glorious Palatium Furiarum (The Blazing Palace) from which the Solar Court rules in splendour. This bustling metropolis is by far the most populous region in the realm and, along with its shadowy sister-city the Umbrium, houses upwards of eighty percent of the Solunarian population at any given time. During the reign of a Solar Court, every major government agency in the kingdom is headquartered in the Luxium, with the notable exception of The Silver Sentinels, the covert intelligence agency run by the House of Phaedryn-Sol’Aværys.

Khyan’s words burned him, venomous and sharp, much like the asp he’d come to embody. Æros understood the boy’s fury, circumstances being as they were, but he’d never asked for this; rather, trading Khyan’s soul for his own was, quite possibly, the worst fate he could imagine, and the boy would see that in his Aura if he looked. However, the fallen half-blood felt it impossible to deny the deal, sacrilegious to say no. The Founders themselves had treated with an old God to pluck his soul from the Void…it felt beyond insulting to Them, to even Shaeoth, to break and allow himself to recede back into that dark place, lost and forgotten, because then, what was the point?

Once Shaeoth had spoken that his words had been accepted and the world began to shift ‘round them all, Æros managed to speak one last time, forcing every fibre of his will into the volume of these words in the hope that he’d be heard, “I wanted to give you everything, Khyan…but I can’t give you, or anyone…the world if I’m dead.

“Enact your vengeance if that is your desire, beloved, but don’t you see? I have my wish– another soul in place of yours. I am no betrayer to you, and…no matter how you may feel, I still love you, with everything I have left, with everything that I may become.”

And to the Founders, "Blessed be that You enabled this gift. I am...ever the more indebted to You Both."

Æros meant every word, and by some grace of fate, he managed to say everything before the force of the winds brewing ‘round him got too loud. If he could, if he had the ability, he’d convey the gravity of his emotions with his Mesmer as he was wont to do; if he could, he’d use that Mesmer to assuage Khyan’s rage, too, to comfort him– but aether in this sorry state of undeath was…difficult to manage.

He’d asked of Shaeoth another option instead of Khyan and, by some twist of fate, the Lord of the Void had granted that wish. He didn’t care what fate he’d next see– he was at peace; he’d get a chance to enact his own vengeance upon that which had tricked him and it would not cost him the soul of his beloved.

By now, the winds of fate had begun to tear at him, first his worldly possessions, and then at his flesh. The process was utterly excruciating. Æros had been, to some degree, masochistic in life…but this? This was beyond anything he’d ever felt, anything he could ever imagine; it was a divine agony that, so extreme in intensity, was, in the end, rapturous.

Say goodnight, to the weakness that you hide behind
Leaving the lies, leaving the fear inside
Never once were you truly alive
So scream all you like, no one can hear you

Khyan lifted his head to gawk in disbelief at Æros.

"Oh, so you were killing me, sending my soul to the Void and stealing my body so you could give me the world?" He shook his head, "I'd have gotten over your death. I will never get over your betrayal." To Khyan's stark satisfaction, Shæoth began to wield the power of the Void to flay the flesh from his deceiver. Flesh that he'd once taken pleasure in caressing, he now relished in the sight of its rending. He could not feel the abject agony elicited from this vibrant violence, but his Sembling gaze could tell that it was a terror beyond trauma. Such pain as mortals were not meant to endure. Were he truly alive he'd have died well before the pain stopped. Such agony had to write itself onto the very soul once housed in those tatters of flesh.

When nothing was left for his physical eyes to see, he could still sense the presence of Æros' Aura, as Shæoth addressed his former lover before turning to speak to him.

Wearing a snake-fanged smile, Khyan looked to the loftier figures... to Aværys, whose golden gaze felt familiar, though those eyes had been worn by Finn when last they regarded him.

"I have failed You. I lacked focus, lost Power and wasn't Hungry enough to regain it. I have found my appetite. I remain your servant and if Your Radiant Vassal calls upon me and I am able to answer, I shall." He looked then to Shæoth.

"Now that I have found my Ambition, I thank You for your aid in its realisation." He looked to the empty spot where Æros had been and considered the education in agony Shæoth had just provided. He was but a mortal, and yet he would strive toward dealing even greater heights of misery to the object of his enmity. A quote from an old play came to mind, which broadened his smile as he spoke it:

"The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard, but I will better the instruction." He looked, next to Varvara, bowing his head.

"And now, my Sacrifice, Domina Divina. Morituri Te salutant." And with a final nod to his goddess, he took Shæoth's cue, and stalked to the end of the platform. The heat wafting up from the core of Sorokyn was stifling and the grey air made his mortal lungs choke. This would be painful, but nothing approaching what he would deal Æros. The Founders watched as Khyan extended his arms and, without even pausing at the ledge, walked off and tumbled, smiling against the heat searing the flesh of his face.

Aværys and Varvara turned to Shæoth and bowed, as a blood-red spectral form shot forth like an eruption from Sorokyn, hovering behind the Prince of the Void. Khyan felt powerful... he felt severe. He didn't just have purpose, he was purpose now. There was one thing that had never really occurred to him about vengeance until he was its exemplar: It was fun.

REVIEW TIME

Aeros
Lores: 8 Skill Lores

Loot: See Multifaceted
Injuries: See Multifaceted

Points: 15, may not be used for magic or ghost skills

Comments: Beware a lover scorned.

Khyan
Lores: 8 Skill Lores

Loot: +1 Death and return as a Spirit of Vengeance

Khyan, now a vengeance spirit, has a special tie to Aeros. If Aeros is ever in the same region of play as Khyan, Khyan will be able to find him, regardless of protections. Khyan is also entirely immune to all magic from Aeros, regardless of level. Finally, any person that thinks Aeros' name or says it or communicates it in any way may indirectly summon Khyan to them. Any Summoner of appropriate level and knows Khyan's name may summon him, or without his name but seeking a Spirit of Vengeance may also summon him. Khyan, while in service to Shaeoth as a spirit of vengeance, is kept in the custody of the Twins of Solunarium.

As this was discussed in DMs, Khyan will be retired into an NPC. He can be utilized by Pharaoh, or by those granted permission by Pharaoh, to modbomb appropriately following the above conditions.

Injuries: Dead.

Points: 15, may not be used for magic

Comments: A faithful servant always has one final choice.
