Aurin smirked at the compliment. Most of his smiles were crooked like that, but one got the sense that he was sharing a joke with them rather than making them the butt of it.

"Sometimes you have to make your calculations quickly," he admitted. He had become quick when it came to the calculus of the deal. So many aspects were difficult to quantify, to monetize, but he was content to cede actual coin for hooks and favors. If Ivar Shipper thought being generous and magnanimous was a good way to win his good humor, it was certainly a start.

"I never was much of a one for schooling," he admitted, "but I figure quickly, and I remember quite a bit. He wasn't a regular when I still worked here, but people tend to share their secrets with bartenders and such. Never underestimate the allure of an ear without judgment and a shoulder to cry on. And a steady source of intoxicants." He laughed.

Aurin had learned mostly from observation, though he had begun to read books from time to time. They gave him more context to draw upon when it came to being a bullshit artist. And for all that he occasionally rolled his eyes at the artistic director of the theater, he was learning quite a bit from him, at least in terms of art and aesthetics, drawing his own connections to the song and dance of the courtesans and what he knew from before Kalzasi. He could at least approximate the veneer of education and sophistication when the need arose.

"Have you checked out Ale'Ephirum yet? For magical supplies and... hm, information about those who practice magic in Kalzasi?" If he had or if he hadn't, Ivar might be the right person to send there for information, being of the same cut of cloth as those who identified as mages, unlike Aurin who just saw himself as a man with varied tricks up his sleeve.

When Aurin admitted he wasn't much of a scholar, Ivar just sort of nodded. Like he was taking that in, understanding it, but not judging it. It was a cool thing to see.

"I respect your honesty. We all learn in different ways, right? Some of us go to school and study. Some of us... observe, learn quickly, remember. It's different, but not lesser, you know? If I could have figured out magic on my own I would quit in a heartbeat but I need them to show me how it’s done."

Ivar's eyes kind of lit up at the mention of Ale'Ephirum. Like he was thinking about a good friend or something.

"Yeah, Ale'Ephirum. I go there quite a bit actually. They've got a ton of magic stuff. I can’t say I’ve ever gone there with the intent to snoop around though. I’m usually in a rush to get my supplies and head back to school."

The words just kind of tumbled out of him. Ivar was pretty chill, usually, but one could tell he was passionate about this place. He kind of wanted his own shop like that one day, once he was good enough for it. The money he could make from there could be spent on lots of ladies. He could take one look around this establishment and see a handful he wouldn’t mind wasting money on if he was rich. Sadly he didn’t know if he’d ever make it. He’d been studying for a few years now and he didn’t consider himself much more than a beginner.

"You're up to something, Aurin. Got a plan? A job? You've got my interest."

There was this spark in Ivar's eyes then. Like he was ready for whatever Aurin was about to throw at him. Adventure, profit, chaos, whatever. Ivar was in.

Aurin's laugh was amiable enough.

"Not many academics would agree with you," he noted wryly. "At least the ones I've met have thought higher education was the be all and end all of intelligence and wisdom. Anyway, I'm not sensitive about it. My wits are sharp enough to get me by. But I would imagine that with the dangers of magic, it would be better learned from a master than by trial and error."

He had gotten a crash course in Masquerade and Semblance way back in the day, and managed not to fry his own brains. Having Valencia initiate him and then continue to train him in Traversion, though, he had learned faster and felt more confident taking on new challenges. As for Ale'Ephirum, he had steered clear. The proprietor was a gravity well of power and he didn't want to hazard a bet that he could mask his aura from someone so powerful.

The ginger laughed again at Ivar's eager questioning.

"I have a job next door," he said. "But if you were in the possession of secrets from the Tower or Ale'Ephirum, I'm certain I could help you fence them."

Aurin wasn't afraid of getting his hands dirty, but often as not anymore, he would delegate things, the better to oversee the big picture. Of course, he didn't delegate his trips to Zaichaer's ruins or the like. Some things were better done oneself.

Aurin's plan of selling information was right up his alley. Selling magical rumors added an extra level of danger though. Danger that he was well aware of. Still, Ivar loved a good challenge, especially if there was a chance to win big. He’d been at the school for years so he knew quite a few people. He had made use of rumors at school before but never to make money. In fact, it was a place he largely respected so it irked him to think of betraying it.

His mixed feelings were short lived. In the end he still had not made any oaths to the institution because he still wasn’t good enough. His ineptitude at magic was one of the reasons he was careful around other mages. He had seen what a powerful mage was capable of and he had no intentions of letting a mage know that he’d crossed them.

"Sounds interesting. If I find something interesting I'll remember you."

Their talk got cut off when a lady came over to their table. She was looking at the shiny coins in Ivar's hand. The effects of his drink were hitting him in full force. While he had planned on saving every last coin, the woman gave him other ideas. Now he was planning to have some fun with them. He stopped for a second, looking at the lady and then back at Aurin. He had a big grin on his face.

"Looks like I got someone's attention. I think it's time I went and enjoyed myself. Gotta have some fun, right?"

The woman pulled him away and Ivar waved back at Aurin. He committed the man’s face to memory so he would be able to recognize him in the future.

"I'll keep your offer in mind!”

Then the two of them disappeared into a room together.
