Brenner chuckled at the charming demeanour of their host.

"Well Kalzasi itself is quite exotic to Zaichaeri eyes. More so than Gel'Grandal, I would warrant, so we've no need of availing ourselves of any imports when all of our surroundings are so... Captivatingly different from our norm." Indeed, their goals here were focused on Kalzasern culture. Though it might be tempting to explore some of the influence of other foreign realms, they simply hadn't the time to afford to such indulgences.

Brenner smirked to himself at Aurin's assessment of the local morale. He leaned in closer to the man and lowered his voice.

"I have to say the Avialae in the Imperium do a sterling job of protecting their realm without subjugating the populace under a reign of their own." He glanced to Stefan, his expression broadcasting that he was intrigued by the red-haired man. He was volunteering far more information that Brenner had invited, and hadn't beat around the bush whatsoever in his response.

"I suppose, at the end of the day, there are those who might claim Zaichaer is just as homogeneous in our leadership, as we've only ever known human rule. But there is nothing, strictly speaking, that would prevent a non-human from holding the position of Grand Marshal. It's just that, well..." He shrugged, "We are the majority, aren't we, boys?" He sniggered and lifted his glass in toast to something he hadn't explicitly said, then downed the remainder of the shot.

"A Mad King, you say?" Brenner's eyebrows rose at that little tidbit, and the name Jacien which rung bells. He'd done a bit of research in advance of Talon's visit to Zaichaer, and another more thorough round before this trip. "That sounds fascinating! Two kings in one city? And both of them Synnekar, I'll be bound. I'll be interested to see how that plays out, though it reminds me of a quote from another piece of classic theatre..." He glanced back toward the auditorium out of which they'd stepped only a few minutes earlier,

"Two stars keep not their motion in one sphere."

Listening to the sharp-featured manager speak was more useful to Stefan than almost all the diplomatic conversations he had so far endured in the city.

The population being unaware of better systems of government made sense. Stefan would begin making notes on how to educate the populous as to the benefits of being governed by their own kind as soon as might be. The idea that some would oppose anything new simply because it was new was harder for him to understand. Progress had been the way of Zaichaer since long before he'd been born. Clinging to the past, however awful, merely because it was familiar was...

Well, he would not mock the thought process, but he would also begin setting down plans for how to dislodge such archaic ideas as anti-progress from the minds of the citizens.

Glancing at Master Kavafis Stefan reassessed the man. He was human, clearly intelligent, clearly capable of leading, and with a keen understanding of the political shifts as well as a finger on the pulse of the populous. Such a person could move much higher in Zaichaer than he currently might in Kalxasi, but that was soon to change.

"I can't imagine a society where everyone agreed." He said, finally speaking after listening for so long, "But understanding the current tides of want and need is a very valuable skill."

Reaching into the breast pocket of his coat he pulled out his business card, which included the address that would get mail to his office, and offered it to Aurin.

"It is possible I might have an interest in following the flow of such tides in the feature. My family has a great business interest in possible expanding to Kalzasi."

Aurin chuckled at Brenner's wit.

"They do, indeed," he agreed. There was no arguing that point; the Kathar were ruthless killers. Whether it was any more fair to be born with a collar around one's neck as with a diadem on one's brow was another matter. But to his mind, the world wasn't fair. He just did what he could to game the system for him and his; after that, of course, he wanted egalitarianism and world peace.

"I think the king is but a man, as I am: the violet smells to him as it doth to me," was his reply. No doubt Brenner Dornkirk was more learned than he was, but he had picked up a thing or two from the theater and from Arry's memorization of lines. When Stefan Dornkirk offered him his card, he accepted it, read it with all due respect, and then tucked it into a pocket. He set his drink down on the bar and pulled out one of his own to reciprocate. Business cards were a new thing to him, but Yserloo had insisted and Aurin could see how they would be helpful in his playacting as a businessman of good repute.

His smile at the quieter brother was genuine. Aurin wanted lines of communication; time would tell whether they were reliable or not, but he was giving them some of the intelligence they wanted, and tit for tat, someday they might return the favor.

"The cutting edge of airborne travel, eh?" He smiled and picked up his drink again. "If we aren't born with wings, good men will build them for us." He raised his glass as if to the Dornkirk name and business.

"Ah!" Brenner placed his drink down to literally applaud Aurin for the quote. "Same playwright, same cycle of plays!" He chuckled, "I suspect that rowdy young prince would have quite enjoyed the libertine delights of Kalzasi, ere he heard the call of duty and shirked his wild ways in favour of righteous action." He didn't leave his drink unattended for long, collecting it again as soon as that thought was out and taking a sip.

He nearly did a spit take at Aurin's response to Stefan's card, but he caught the laugh in his mouth before any schnapps was spewed forth. He rushed to gulp it down and coughed slightly as he began to laugh. He patted Aurin on the shoulder and nodded. He looked to Stefan with an encouraged grin and said:

"This guy gets it!" As he squeezed Aurin's shoulder, before letting his hand fall back to his side.

"Indeed, our family business has long been about the work of helping Zaichaer to sustain an equilibrium in the North. The balance of power between the sciences and the arcane is famously a matter of great interest in our Fatherland. As I'm certain you can imagine, one of the most striking contrasts I've seen in your city is the common, unregulated practise of magic. It is odd to think..." Brenner pursed his lips, "That any and every experience I have enjoyed here may have been augmented in some way- Whether through external illusion, mental manipulation or aught else. Even your opera..." He glanced over his shoulder toward the doors that led back into the auditorium,

"Not all of those spectacles were practical effects, were they?" He shook his head, "To use witchcraft for something as wanton as recreation is, as you might imagine, anathema to my Zaichaeri mind."

Aurin held up a hand to forestall the applause; it didn't work, but he tried.

"Don't give me too much credit," he begged. "I can't say as I remember exactly which plot belonged to which play in the cycle, but a few lines did stick enough that I remember them to prove I'm paying attention."

He chuckled at all the following responses, as well. A part of him wondered if Stefan's silence was an act—one brother voluble and affable, the other quiet and observant. Some confidence games requires several players. They certainly had the wit, though he didn't know them well enough to gauge their cunning. He supposed a certain amound would be required to advance in the military and business spheres of the High City.

"Ahh, you would be surprised, I think, as I was by how many of the effects are practical. There's a science to the art. A great deal of it chemistry and engineering, actually, but yes... There are some effects either too intricate or too expensive, in which case a direct illusion is required. But as the one largely responsible for the theater's purse strings, I afforded this one a larger budget because, as I told the director, it would be in poor taste to paint a play like this up with glamour like some whore when the culture from which it comes would be offended by it. So there's less..." He wiggled his fingers dismissively. "...glamouring to this one than most."

"Pardon my coarse words, gentlemen. I'm still learning my refinement." He took a sip of his drink.
