Appearance

Merilgo stands at nearly 175cm tall with dark grey skin, reminiscent of cloudy mornings before the sun rises. Pitch black eyes of a crow and thick black brows share every expression that passes through their mind, and their square face is crowned with elastic black curls. Although they shave every few days, they are more often to be seen with a light peppering of stubble across their jaw, often complemented by a mischievous smirk or a light pout. Merligo’s sharp Fae’ethalon ears and curved Lysanrin nose are always adorned with silver piercings to match the bands they adorn their fingers with.

Merilgo largely looks Lysanrin, but with noticeably sharp Fae’ethalan traits. Their most notable feature is the two ram-like horns that sprout from their forehead. These horns are only a shade darker than their skin, hollow, and hard as bone. They extend over the crown of their skull, beginning to curl upward and together at the top of their curls. No hair grows in front of these horns, one can see precisely where their grey skin peels back from the grey bone, marking them as Lysanrin offspring. Merilgo’s eyes are an unsettling all-around black as a crow, reminiscent of their first Animus shape and just as keen in sight. Before learning Animus, Merilgo's eyes were a deep maroon red, and their eyes do not change with their emotion, unlike their paternal line. One may be able to tell every mood from their expressive face, but the all-consuming black will remain the same.

Raised by a merchant group of Fall Fae, Merilgo grew up experimenting with a wide variety of fashions. With a tendency to change their gender with the season, they have amassed quite a taste for accessories, evident in the silver piercings and bands on their fingers. They decorate their eyes with kohl and dress their hair nearly every morning, and refusing to sleep without a silk head covering. They typically wear their crow totem around their neck on a long chain, and always have an excuse to leave their shirt strategically unbuttoned. They favor a short black boot, sturdy and versatile with a bit of heel. You’ll always find a hidden knife tucked in beside colorful and obviously homemade wool socks. Merilgo’s clothes tend not to be nearly as extravagant as their accessories. Opting typically for tight high-waisted trousers, and flowing shirts. They will wear a vest, cloak, or a dress when the occasion calls, but otherwise dress sensibly… and plain. They wear durable and simple clothes on purpose to draw the eye away from the obvious use and mending in their dress, a result of their transient lifestyle. At a glance, Merilgo is dark, graceful, and confident. It only takes a few moments of careful observation to see they are also poor and scrappy, so they distract anyone who reads too closely with a wave of their fingers and a melodic chuckle.

Personality
Merilgo is very expressive considering how silent they are. More inclined to watch a room than speak up in one, but that doesn’t stop them from displaying ever-changing emotions plainly. When they do speak, their words are carefully chosen and concise. Having grown up as a half-Lysanrin in a loving full Fae’ethalan family, they come with some conflicting personality traits and a few reservations about the rest of civilization. On one hand, they are wholly loved, had support from their family, and have encouragement to grow. On the other, external forces wanted to exclude them from their own family, judge them for a culture they didn’t know anything about, and trample them in the way that the world does to young innocent creatures.

Merligo is confident and charismatic and ever fond of wealth. Since they are just seperating from their large family for the first time, they are in a rapid-growth stage. Still optimistic and curious, they hold onto the values they were taught growing up, but battle with their impulses and yearning for greater things. When they are not hustling as a merchant, they enjoy local cuisine, confusing strangers, and studying magics. They love honey-flavored pastries, jewelry, and spring (but don’t tell their family). They dislike blind faith and large cities, but are a sucker for foolish bravery and rare coveted things… Funny how often Merilgo finds themselves in large cities putting blind faith in brave fools in order to acquire rare coveted things.

History

Merilgo has always known love. Their mother is a nurturing matriarch, a Fae’ethalan of the Fall Court. As a result, they grew up with a strong inspiring central figure and a large, loving family. She had Merilgo very young, and never shared anything about Merilgo's Lysanrin father, so they suspect the worst. But before Merilgo became aware of memories, their family had already grown to include their jolly stepfather, and their generous grandmother and her cunning companion who both had a say in raising them. Not a few years after Merilgo first began to speak and toddle, they now had a full Fae'ethalan sister, followed by a brother a few years later. While it was acknowledged that Merilgo was not fully Fae'ethalan, there was never alienation from that fact, and the love from their family is true. Merilgo still has a strong bond with them to this day.

While Merilgo was growing up, their parents built a strategic merchant trading business to keep their family comfortable. This lifestyle allowed the family to travel through Ransera meeting various people and getting introduced to new cultures following the curiosities and whims of their Fall Fae parents. Merilgo was able to learn about various magics and was ever curious about the possibilities they offered. There were challenges growing up migrant, spending more time travelling the vast wilderness with precious cargo than surrounded and safe in the bustling cities. Despite it, Merilgo grew up largely loved and comfortable with an aptitude for the family business and a confidence that may not have been wholly earned.

Animus

When Merilgo was fourteen, they met an Animus Mage, and begged to learn the magic. The mage had a good business relationship with Merilgo’s parents so she struck a deal with the young teen. If Merilgo could take her instruction and study as much as they could on one particular animal, then she would consider initiating them into the magic. Eager to impress the mage, Merilgo chose a Crow to learn about. Over the following year, whenever their family made camp near a big city they would run to the falconers, to the dovecotes, and to the libraries to acquire as much anatomical, medicinal, behavioral, mystical, and any other knowledge they could about crows. Their father even gifted Merilgo a crow for their birthday, which they began to study and trained as a messenger bird.

A year later, they presented the Animus mage with everything they had learned. She was delighted with Merilgo's effort and told them that they would need to make a totem and he would have to learn to meditate. And again she struck a deal. If Merilgo could create a physical totem and gain some experience in meditation by the next time they saw one another… she would consider initiating him. Again, Merilgo was determined to learn this magic and so sought out various meditative practices, consulted wisemen and spiritual leaders in each city, learning how to focus their mind and soul. It was also during this time, Merilgo was able to exchange letters with the Animus mage through their crow. This human mage became a mentor to young Merilgo, helping them dive into the theoretical world of Animus while they pursued their meditative studies.

By the time Merilgo was sixteen, the human mage agreed to initiate them. They brought their totem and bounds of newfound theory and knowledge of Animus. Their mother and father accompanied them during the initiation, trusting their friend to keep their child as safe as possible, and wanting to support them in this new journey. Merilgo remembers the initiation as being the worst pain of their lives. They had rolled an ankle or smashed a finger in their youth, but it was nothing like the agony of the first transformation. But they were able to focus on everything they had learned. They knew how their bones and skin were shifting to mimic the bird they grew to love so dearly. They could hear their mother sobbing, the tense huffs of their father holding in his fear, the encouraging words of their master through the entire process… and they came out of the initiation still whole of body and mind.

Merilgo took to Animus quickly, and they continued to learn and stay in touch with the human mage until her death when Merilgo was twenty-four, the first death they felt as if she were family, and the first death that put the longevity of their kind into perspective. After this mentorship, they found their early adult years filled with distraction and yearning for attention, leaving their studies in the shadows. It wasn’t until being introduced to Alchemy at thirty that they found their hunger for knowledge again. Resuming their Animus studies on the encouragement of their family, they began to seek the magic knowlege they yearned for with new vengence, finding the calling powerful enough to take them on a different path than their family.
