Personality
His outward persona is a carefully crafted facade, a mixture of truth and expectation consciously developed since childhood. Possessing wealth, status, and comfort beyond what most citizens - let alone residents - of Zaichaer could scarcely imagine the Michaelis family had become accustomed to acquiring whatever they desired. And for an ancient family of the old nobility, the health and vigor of their firstborn son was a prize worth defying both fate and the State.
Possessing a terrible secret, and well knowing the price of exposure, Anton keeps his true thoughts closely guarded. Well aware of his hypocrisy, he has been taught to limited effect that such 'exceptions' to the law are his birthright. Intensely conflicted between a genuine loyalty to Zaichaer on the one hand, and the desire to avoid bringing shame and condemnation to himself and his family on the other, he frequently vents his frustrations on those he believes are more worthy of the Order's attentions.

History
Weeks turned to months, months to years, and still Anton remained in a hazy state in between life and death. Those who still clung to archaic religion claimed that he was bound between Raella and Wraedan, and that mere medicine could only ever treat the symptoms of such a condition. Whether or not his parents believed such, their desperation became obvious when they finally called upon a bearer of Mendicus. His breathing finally steadied, his fevers faded, and his heart pumped with a newfound strength, but the damage had been done. The boy would live, but the shock of illness, medicines, and magic had struck him blind beyond the capability of all but the most potent of Mystics to heal.
For nearly a decade Anton was kept secluded from the world, tutored in private and kept within the walls of the family estate. Officially, this was to avoid testing his still frail health, with only a carefully chosen few even aware of the truth. Raised in a family many would consider cruel in its beliefs, Anton as its eldest son was an intense embarrassment to his father. An embarrassment he was intent on rectifying. A deal was struck in absolute secrecy, a mage smuggled into the family's estate in the dead of night. Gold was given, and young Anton was marked with the Cardinal Rune of Semblance.
He saw, but the sights were lies, the trauma of threshold sickness lashing him to impossible visions and vivid dreams. Without the aid of a mentor, or a family versed in magic, he was left to fend for himself, lost in the fantastical hallucinations for months before finally mastering his mind. Continuing with his studies while attempting to master his new abilities, he remained sequestered within the walls of his home until he finally reached manhood. At last, in late Searing of 121 Steel, it was announced that Anton Michaelis would be pursuing a degree at the Institute in the coming term.
